LOVED this movie but recording in the streets...

is beyond stupid.Bands have recorded classic songs in someones garage. You really dont need a professional studio bur you do need some kind of controlled environment,as anyone who has ever recorded will tell you.

... was a great idea!🐭

agreed - kinda the part where you have to suspend your disbelief - would have been way less charming if they had just recorded in a dingy garage :)

reply

Yes you are right, what a stupid documentary.

Oh wait.

reply

Yes, technically it's the optimal situation to have a controlled environment, but artistically I thought it was a great idea to record in public places and allow some of the environment to bleed through and become part of things.

Plus, you can use very highly directional mics, meaning they pick up pretty much only what's in a very narrow field in front of them, taking care of the problem of too much ambient noise. With highly directional mics on everyone's instruments, they probably had to mic the street separately.

Not true at all. Now, did they likely have the engineering staff on hand to pull it off? No, not likely.

reply

it's not that hard to do. would have taken an hour to set up. you get what you get. you edit around it. recording a band in that fashion is a one or 2 person job. microphone plugs into recorder, capture performance, mix it later.

reply

I've done remote recording, all by myself. Dragging a 75-pound mixer around, setting up lots of mics, and having to mix on the spot to final recording. You just work hard and get it done.

no way the NYC noise wouldn't leak over.
