daughter's guitar playing
Was basically punk, was it not? THere was no skilled shaping of the melody line. It was pretty hamfisted, amateurish. Yes? Did anyone else hear it differently?

shareessentially a 14 year old jamming on her dads project. so pretty much the character pulling off the script. perfectly done. not bad but not silly good either
shareRight, and Dad's encouragement would have been appropriate at home, but seemed over-the-top on the side of a semi-pro or pro recording. I guess that was supposed to be funny, but as an amateurish guitar player myself it made me uncomfortable.
shareThe message was passion for music over making a 'product'. Recording it on the street because it gave a fun vibe rather than in a studio environment. It was totally in keeping with the 'music gives you purpose' and ' music is for the player' vibe of the film. Keira's character makes a few speeches about keeping her music the way it is because that's how it is type thing. no compromise, no pandering. the daughter jamming out in her hamfisted reduced skill but beautiful effort way is exactly the vibe of the project. perfect detail.
shareWell, they said beforehand that she was NOT a trained or even good guitar player.
He wanted her in the song because he loved her and knew it would be a fun bonding experience for them. Gretta wanted it, too.
There is another reason to fill your heart with hatred.
Hamfisted? No. Her part on that song was fresh, refreshing and she was good. It was simple yet soaring, and added greatly to the arrangement in a free-flowing way.
It was only punk in attitude -- just play what you feel -- but musically it was just nothing you can label. It just fit. I loved the daughter's playing and contribution.
She was adding interesting, well-timed sounds to the proceedings, even if unexpected. You hear the same sorts of things in Beatles songs.
