Why is Daniel Brühl considered 'support' for this film?

I see that Daniel Brühl was nominated for a few 'Best Supporting Actor' awards. But whilst there's absolutely no doubt he utterly deserved to be nominated for his brilliant work in this film, why wasn't he considered the co-lead? I don't think it's against award guild rules to nominate two actors from the same film within the 'Best Actor/Actress' category, since both Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis were nominated as Best Actress for 'Thelma & Louise', and F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce were both nominated as Best Actor for 'Amadeus'.

Surely Niki Lauda's part in the film was every bit as significant as James Hunt's, perhaps slightly more. Anyway, both actors were excellent but Brühl ultimately stole the film.

I know. It was as much about his character as it was Hemsworth's. And they both played their parts to perfection.
Had Nikki not crashed and been out for a month, there no way Hunt could have/would have won that GP.
I felt so many emotions for Laurder's character, whereas Hemsworth's character was just like Hunt, a womanising, drinking , smoking rich kid who brought rock n roll to F1.
Fascinating story. I'm not even an F1 fan, but this movie was absolutely awesome. The way they blended original footage with the new footage was brilliant too.
Imo, one of the best movies I've seen. Not just the movie, but the actual story, and the fact that it was a true story was even more fascinating.
I doubt very much whether you'd see F1 as exciting today.

I watched this movie a couple of months back, and it's remained one of the best movies I've seen. And I watch a lot of movies!

Yes, it's a very good movie. Ron Howard is expert at making films about real life events that take place over defined time periods, such as the 1976 F1 racing season in this film, (see also Apollo 13 and Frost/Nixon) and should perhaps focus on telling these types of stories in future.

I'm not a F1 fan either but like you I enjoyed the film immensely, and I also agree that Lauda's character was more complex than Hunt's.

It's because he's Thor I reckon. Maybe trying to show that he can do more than play a Norse god, but in doing so, he actually ends up using a pretty similar voice.
In fact I've seen him in quite a few things where he's got that slightly regal British accent, which isn't bad as far as Americans doing Brit accents go, but he sounds like a posh kid, which was perfect for that roll I guess.
