Why all cops at airport

What was the need for all that security at a Greek airport in 1962? It was a time of peace, a time before terrorism and hijackings, so what were the Greeks so suspicious of?

Maybe because they where looking for murderers at a time when cameras or any other form of electronic/automated security didn't exist?

Exposition later in the film explains why - Mortensen's character frames the lad, so he had tipped off the police to look for a lone traveller. Went back to the ticket counter, changed his ticket & left the lad sitting by himself - framed for a murder & out of Mortensen's hair. Also, airport security was more physical in those days - no cameras, scanners, face-matching technology etc. Police and customs, uniformed and plain-clothed, relied on their eyes and gut instinct.
