Con stands for confidence. So a con man is someone who plays confidence games. He deceitfully tricks people out of their money. A con artist can be small, like someone in Vegas who does sidewalk magic for example, and after he's finished and walks away, the audience might notice their wallets gone, or their jewelry missing. More often it's someone like Bernie Madoff who made people believe that he was an investor and was making all his clients rich, when in reality, he was lining his own pockets with their money. They all ended up broke. He's a MAJOR con man.

Watch "The Sting". Probably the best example of good con artistry.

It is somebody who has the art of gaining your confidence only in order to trick you, steal away from you or take benefit from you.

A con artist is someone who paints after serving time in prison.

The term just sucks. "Artist" is so misleading. In the germanic languages we use the term "Swindler", but unfortunately the term doesn't see much use in English. "Fraudster" is also sadly not used, but gets the point across much better.

Con Artist is actually not used much either -- you would more commonly say 'con man' or going back a few years, a 'grifter' or 'confidence trickster'. A swindler is a more general term that includes quacks and frauds.

A con man, specifically, is someone who uses trickery. The trickery can include sleight of hand, elaborate set ups, props, shills, etc. The term 'con artist' refers to the fact that it is more of a creative art than simply lying or selling snake oil (which would make the person a swindler, or quack, but not necessarily a con 'artist').

Con artists, essentially, are people who are well-practiced at trickery. They are sometimes celebrated in books and movies (such as "The Sting"), and sometimes not so much(such as in "The Grifters"). A Swindler is essentially the same thing, but has the less complimentary connotation.

The meanings are the same, they just have different connotations.

we also use Swindler and fraudster. theyre similar but not quite the same. The main differnce with a con man/con artist compared to a swindler or fraudster (to paraphrase a movie, The Sting if i remember correctly) is that a con artist can walk out of town. a swindler or fraudster usually runs...

Seriously, we need this here?

And anyway, any successful politician is a perfect example of a con artist.

Revenge is a dish that best goes stale.

It's gotten really pathetic with some of these people. Every article on any site about any topic and it's ObamaObamaObama. What sad, pointless, empty lives these losers must have...

reply

The word con comes from the word confidence because they used to be called confidence men because they must gain the confidence of the people they are trying to steal from.
