For about the last fifteen years Meryl, it seems to me, plays one of two keys: seriously dramatic or comic. A variety of character traits that seemed at one time limitless have noticeably been repeated.
Yes, she has a range, and I acknowledge the choices, but rarely consider them anything BUT choices, these days.
Think Streep at her best when playing comedy. Am serious when I say DEATH BECOMES HER one of Streep's greatest performances. She actually makes you forget the special effects.
Her last performance that I believed was in MAMA MIA.
I would disagree on the contention that the films were more centred on the male lead "back then". That is a huge generalization. However, I would agree wholeheartedly that Meryl Streep is much better than KH. KH was very overrated and did not adapt herself into a role as Streep has done so often and so effectively. Seen one KH characterization and you have seen them all.
