Howard Hughes films

I've been hoping for a film about Hughes since I read the biography Empire, 20+ years ago. Even back then there was talk of Martin Scorsese and Warren Beatty both wanting to do a film about Hughes. As far as I know, there's only been two bio pics made – a TV movie in the 70s which I haven't seen, and The Aviator, which was hit & miss - and a handful of fiction, and based-on characters.

The Amazing Howard Hughes (1977) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075670/
Melvin & Howard (1980 - fiction) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081150/
The Aviator (2004) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338751/

This Beatty project is news to me until a few minutes ago. I really hope it's more better than Bugsy ... I tried to watch it again recently. It was historically inaccurate, and hasn't aged well.

Christopher Nolan was going to direct an adaptation of the book "Citizen Hughes" with Jim Carrey in the starring role back in the early 2000s, but then Scorsese and DiCaprio got the funding to make The Aviator. As a result, Nolan's film was scrapped and he went on to make his Batman films. He's been out promoting Interstellar recently and the Daily Beast asked him a question about the Hughes film. He basically said that he thinks it's the best script he ever wrote, and that it was frustrating he never got it made. He didn't say whether or not he would make it eventually, but he did mention that he hasn't completely shelved the idea. So here's hoping that he gets around to directing it at some point.

Nothing will top The Aviator. But this might be an interesting film. Warren's age though - isn't he too old?

Martin Scorcese's "The Aviator" was a fun, big budget film that won Cate Blanchett an Oscar playing Katherine Hepburn. But it ended while Hughes was still a young man. So this would be a fresh take on Hughes life as an old man and perhaps even more interesting. Beatty is known for quality so I hope he gets this made.

And it stole an academy award from Caleb Deschanel, who lost to special effects, not cinematography. This film may remedy that!!

Especially when the music goes up and you see Hughes, for the first time, on the phone denying he had long hair and even longer fingernails. Chilling!

Oh, hoyo-mont you might want to re-edit this part of your OP:

hope it's more better

"It's the system, Lara. People will be different after the Revolution."

The man made an impact on the world while he lived. But there have to be other historical people to make biopic films about. I feel there's too much focus on Hughes now that he's protrayed in yet another film.

They could make a million movies about Howard hughes and I would still be interested. Since he led such a big life, there are so many sections of his life to make movies about. So many different aspects. The Aviator for example only told some of the story, and ended before he became a total recluse.

Hell, The Rocketeer is almost a Howard Hughes movie too.

Great movie!
