Do we need yet another retelling of the Arthur legends?

Not in my mind.

I am fascinated by the legends and read about them avidly. Each time there is a new movie, or TV series I want it to be good but I have been disappointed most times.

Excalibur is still the only big screen adaptation that I have any time for. I am glad it was made when it was, in the way it was. If made today it would have too much reliance on special effects / CGI.

from the trailer I have seen, it's just another Guy Ritchie "lads" movie and the mythical elements removed or downplayed. I live in hope but fear the worst.

just like retelling of Shakespeare or modern versions of any classic opera, etc: yes, we do!! but, come on, this looks like a crappy caper film with goofy image-obsessed celebrity clowns. past versions felt like they could easily have come from the stage, not MTV. so, again, yes, new versions are welcome, but pouring one's soul into it is also welcome.

We certainly don't need another bad retelling, but I wouldn't mind a good one. Sadly, it doesn't seem that King Arthur is going to be very good.

Yes. Like you mentioned every other Arthurian film is either a disappointment or doesn't hold a candle to Excalibur. This one though is very good, great even, & has the same excitement & epic grandness of Excalibur. The acting of the main villain - Jude Law - was delicious.

Also Mists of Avalon was actually another good Arthurian miniseries. You should give it a go.

PS. I don't understand if you're fascinated by a genre of storytelling, why do you want it limited? Look at all the superhero films? I love the gangster/crime genre & I want more, good ones for sure, but I certainly won't hinder people making more of it.

& so many posters here trashing it before its release, sigh.
