Well I think they were trying to show that he looks like a guy you would see at the supermarket or a guy you would see walk down the street. People like to think sometimes that creepy people look a certain way but really they look like you and me. Plus it was disturbing to see him interact with his daughter after this like nothing ever happened.

This wasn't supposed to be a whodunit. It was about how people can be so compliant that they will go along with a supposed authority figure even when the demands made are outrageous. The tension wasn't supposed to come from not knowing who he was, the tension came from them showing who he was, e.g. not a cop, yet he was able to get people, over the phone, to do whatever he said.
