I couldn't fathom......ANYONE....
Falling for this!! Or going along with this!! Not in Jersey or New York, at least.
This is ridiculous!!!

Well, it happened in real life. That's the point.

Maybe not this exactly, because its context specific.
But people are all susceptible to certain mechanisms of influence, in certain contexts. Obedience to authority (a third of people will indirectly kill someone else if asked to by a scientist), bystander apathy (in New York a woman was left to die after screaming, having been stabbed multiple times, because no one did anything), influence of role play (cops abusing power/authority, managers abusing dominance over staff).
Its not as if people living in a big city are all automatically savvy and aware enough to not be responsive, even unconsciously, to particular stimuli.
Humans really are far more mechanical than people would like to believe.
I completely agree. If I was that girl, I would have said I didn't steal sh*t, quit and walked out. No way I'd be taking my clothes off.

I worked for a suicide hotline for 18 years, and I fielded all sorts of calls, including prank calls.
I wouldn't have fallen for "Officer Daniels" for more than a minute. I would never have acceded to his requests. I would have called a supervisor immediately, and my BS detector would have been ticking off the chart.
One of the stupidest parts of this movie is that "Officer Daniels" was supposedly with Robert ("Robbie"), who was supposed to be one of her supervisors. Why in the heck didn't the Ann Dowd character demand to talk with "Robbie"?
I GET IT that this movie is based on real-life incidents. I UNDERSTAND. Nevertheless, I guess I surround myself with intelligent people, because I don't know anyone who would fall for this -- and the minute I would have heard the words "strip search," I would have known this was a cruel hoax.
No, despite what the director says in the DVD extras, this could NOT have happened to me.
Despite the fact that the movie is based on facts, it doesn't ring true.
