This one belongs to the top five most annoying movies ever!!!

I just can't believe that nobody consider that phone call as a prank call!! WTF!! I couldn't watch the entire movie because it annoyed me how dumb that people where playing.

reply

At least acknowledge the fact that the film didn't stray far from the real situation it portrays. If it were a pure work of fiction then it would be tempting to criticise it as unrealistic. That people were that ignorant in reality is breathtaking. To call that annoying is a huge understatement. it raises hugely serious questions about a culture in which this could actually happen. Sure, the real manager of a MacDonalds upon whom it was based, Donna Summers, was retarded even by American standards, but a sane person should realise that a national culture of unquestioning ignorance was a major contributory factor.

reply

Don't Americans consider it unpatriotic to question authority?

reply

Don't Americans consider it unpatriotic to question authority?

No. Don't confuse our sense of national pride and disdain for people being extremly combative with authority as being totally subjugated by authority.

reply

Actually, are you familiar at all with the Milgram shocking experiment? It shows how far people are willing to go when it comes to obeying an authority figure. Even at their own discomfort and the extreme pain of someone else.

reply

Finally. These people aren't stupid. If you were in that situation you would do the same thing. Even if you think you wouldn't.

reply

No, actually they just have no idea of their constitutional rights. Why? Because we don't teach people what their rights are. The only right people think they have in KY is to own a frigging gun.

I would have told the cop, "You want to arrest or detain the girl, come get her." When he came back to me, I'd have told him, "well come get me too. How do I even know you're even a cop. No cop would do this and if he did, a judge would pillory him unmercifully."

Otherwise I'm busy and I'm sure as hell not doing your frigging job.

Totally ridiculous and an indictment of the educational system.

I could understand if an actual police officer walked in wearing his uniform and badge etc, those are all symbols of authority, but to be compliant to somebody down the phone who CLAIMS to be a police officer, without much proof....?

The prankster CLAIMS to have a victim with him but the manager never once asks to speak to the victim in question. She never asks how it is possible for Becky to steal money from a customer WHILE SERVING BEHIND THE COUNTER-where somebody would definitely have seen her. She never questions the logic of removing Becky's clothes and placing them in her car,so that he can come and collect them!!! Or how Becky found the time to steal money and hide them in her clothes in a convoluted manner.

She never looks at any surveillance footage. She never inquires that if this customer saw Becky steal money from her, why not announce it there and then? She AUTOMATICALLY assumes Becky is guilty without any proof. Did she ever think that if this is a serious matter the police would send someone to pick Becky up?

She spends something like 20 minutes on the phone with this guy, did she even contact her regional manager? She allowed this poor girl to sit in a store room wearing nothing but an apron, she even asks a MALE employee and her BOYFRIEND to supervise the naked young woman ALONE!!!! She didn't even have the decency to provide Becky with some clothes like a T shirt.

This surpasses obeying authority and strays into mentally challenged but even that is an insult to mentally challenged people. This woman is lacking in empathy and common sense.

Becky compliance makes no sense, she submits to being spanked and the oral sex, it never occurs to her to protest in anger or to alert the manager at what is happening. Its not like she was being held at gun point, she as a grown woman she must know that police officers do not ask people to do these things.

The staff employees are all complicit not just the manager because none of them do anything to help her. I do believe that Van her fiance took advantage of Becky, he knew what he was doing. The male employee and the delivery where the only 2 guys who told told the prankster to fvck off-because they where decent to that extent.

reply

Becky were afraid to loose her job and Sandra wasnt stupid, she just went along with the charade to hurt Becky, she was so jealous of Beckys young beauty.

The prankster even said at one time - I am at Beckys brothers apartment looking for drugs and i have a witness here next to me that says Becky stole here purse. Cmon a witness next to a cop out on a drug raid? no one is that stupid.

She didnt react when the prankster said this and she knew they hade cameras over the counter that she could of watched easily, but didnt, so she wasnt stupid, she just played along to hurt Becky as long as possible.

reply

National culture of unquestioning ignorance?

Oh please.

As if this couldn't happen in Canada or Europe or Japan or anywhere else. People are dumb sheep everywhere.

reply

This isn't just "American" stupidity, look at WWII or at any war, soldiers just kill because we are told by someone in authority that these are the enemy and even though we don't know these people we kill them.

In the present war in Iraq, we found out later that the Bush Administration, along with the UK Parliament, lied about the reasons we went to war yet we kept our soldiers there to kill. There are times where we fight an enemy (like the Nazis) but there are also those times where we just go to war for oil or money or whatever without any proof yet we go their just 'following orders'. How is that for stupidity.

reply

Speaking of stupidity, why don't you learn a little bit of history before spouting the talking points of the left concerning the Iraq War? I don't disagree with anyone opposing that war, but here are a few of the people, organizations and countries that also believed Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction: The United Nations, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, John Kerry, the Arab League, etc. etc. etc.

reply

Yeah speaking of stupidity, where do you get your history from?! Everyone now knows, people from what you call the so-called left AND the right, that Saddam Hussein DID'T have any weapons of mass destruction! The argument is that the Bush Administration KNEW that all along and they were the ones who made up the false evidence that they used as proof to go to war. What part of this don't you get, it has nothing to do with democrats or republicans, WE WERE LIED TO so this war would happen, those are the facts (I don't know where YOU get your facts from, FOX News?!)...

There is no debate about it, there was no weapons IN Iraq, we were there and we found none, THIS IS FACT. What the debate is (haven't you been around back 5yrs ago when this was debated all over the news, in Congress, etc...Didn't you hear how many people in the Bush administration GOT FIRED over this?! What the hell are you saying this is the so-called left making stuff up, these are facts and alot of people got fired over this bad evidence....People in the Bush Administration have come forward and admitted that the evidence that they had was bad intel and the debate was if they knew that all along and if they in fact created this false evidence, which obviously they say they didn't (this was the argument about who is too blame over this false evidence not if the evidence was true because everyone knows it wasn't).

Research these situations: The Valerie Plame Scandal (which btw she isn't labeled as a democrat or republican, she WORKED for the CIA), yellowcake uranium (which was discovered was what Hussein was trying to buy), and research all the people who got fired and all the released documents that are now public. Hans Blix, from the UK who stated that he found NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION IN IRAQ. And most importantly, look up the Senate Intelligence Committee of 2008 (who found that the Bush administration "misrepresented the intelligence and the threat from Iraq".)

Read your history before you come out with this 'leftist' bullsh*t. It's a fact and everyone knows that THERE NEVER WAS ANY WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION IN IRAQ...idiot

One last thing: EVEN former president George W. Bush has stated that the biggest regret of his presidency was "the intelligence failure" in Iraq.

reply

Wow sounds like going to Iraq was one big screw up. Thanks for the info.

reply

Saddam had only himself to blame for his fate. He would still have America in his pocket if he had never invaded Kuwait.

reply

Correct.
I really don't fathom how people can dislike the FILM because of the nature and course of the situation depicted.
That would be like saying that SCHINDLER'S LIST is a bad film because it shows Nazis mercilessly killing Jews.
I don't mean to impose, but I am the Ocean.

reply

It should be a crime to be that stupid. The people who fell for this prank call and molested the girl should be punished by the law as well. Who in their right mind actually believes describing a girl's nipples is part of standard police procedure? Being a dumbo is no excuse.

reply

Were pretty sure nix was aware that what he was doing was wrong and that he went along with it cause he wanted to see a 17 year old girl naked and got oral sex (possibly more) out of it. He was hoping that when everything went down that he was gonna be able to play the "I'm an innocent idiot" card. Nix did get 5 years for this though he was punished per say.

reply

When i started watching the movie, i had no idea what it was about. Within 10 seconds of the call happening, i was yelling at the TV that it wasn't a real cop... I tried to stay calm and continue watching but i couldn't... I had to fast forward until they show us the guy in his house. I continued watching but was still very exasperated so i forwarded through the rest to see the conclusion...

reply

happened the same to me... exactly the same feeling of exasperation, wanting to smack them in the head, like "wake up, you retards!" nonono, i just can't believe this is true...

reply

I think the word here is authority. It does sound stupid but it happened/happens IRL. The human mind is very fascinating and you'd be surprised how can it be manipulated given the circumstances. One movie that came to mind while I was watching this was Das Experiment http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250258/ which is based on the Stanford experiment.

reply

i think there were sufficient extenuating circumstances to somehow cause the lady to say "i did what anyone else would do".

for one, it was a rather stressful day. the manager had just been chastised by upstairs. she was in full blown "damage control" mode.

secondly, she did not trust Becky. this is crucially shown in an early scene where the ladies were talking about "sexting". this sour relationship would likely cause the manager to believe the worst accusations against Becky.

thirdly, the caller had a certain mastery of manipulative techniques, specifically over the phone. he was a telemarketer, adept at inducing responses via telephone. he quickly obtained relevant details by baiting the victims to "fill in the blanks". he had an uncanny ability to read the reactions of multiple persons over nothing more than a phoneline, taking notes and covering up all the loopholes in an instant -- this takes quite a good mind which can think off the bat. as the manager said, "he had an answer for everything". not just anyone can pull this off... this was a genius prank caller!

lastly, i believe the personal background of each individual involved played a part. were they bullied or were they bullies in their youth? what was their experience with policemen? how did they learn about sexuality? or power and authority? my guess is that a nexus of unfortunate experiences made possible by the existing culture made this possible. in an Asian culture, no woman could be convinced that "doing something nice for a man" (and a stranger) can include oral sex. the woman would have to be forced against her will far more physically.

reply

Totally with you on that one. Had to skip sections because I was getting SOOOOO annoyed at the incredulous nature of the call and the fact that (apart from Kevin and the older guy at the end) all the other adults just accepted this as "perfectly normal because he said he was a police officer". And BTW, if they were that worried or respecting of the law or whatever, but knew it was wrong what they were subjecting the girl to, WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST SAY THEY WERE DOING ALL THE THINGS BUT NOT ACTUALLY DO THEM????????

reply

Big fan of Dreama Walker, was miffed when 'Bitch in apartment 23' was cancelled.

Was amazed they could drag out such a simple concept for an hour and a half.

Yah, these people were painfully annoying, true story or not.

I did like the real time drive from the police station.

Had to score it low due to the fact I kept wanting to fast forward the thing,

I kept talking to the screen! Why? Why? Whats wrong with you people!!

I was aware of the case which is what led me to watching the film. When I first heard of the story I just concluded that the indviduals involved lacked eduucation and knowledge of the law and the rights of their peers around them. For example when I was in junior high I had a calculator stolen and I knew who did it but also knew I didn't have the right to just search the individual. For some reason that knowledge was lost on these workers in the film.

I watched the film hoping to get an insight (even if artistic license) would show how these individuals were tricked into violating that young girls rights like that. I can imagine people with out knowledge of the case would be annoyed and would be having a "WTF these writers are stupid" moment when watching the movie.

reply

I totally agree with you this film had the chance of binge great but the director had what they call a vision to do it in the most stupidest way . this piece of you know what wasted 2 hours of my life and I want them back .

reply

This film annoyed me so much. I watched it at home and kept getting up saying to myself, "Oh come ON! This is ridiculous." Afterwards I researched the case and watched the real CCTV footage of the actual incident and it's completely made me reevaluate the movie. Everything you see in the film really happened and it's staggering to believe that people would be so gullible. Says a lot about human nature.

I think the filmmaker should have had a caption at the start of the film: "Everything depicted in this film actually happened." Something along those lines. Without that, I totally understand viewers getting mad at the stupidity of the characters, and angry at the filmmaker for thinking they would buy it.

reply

there are so many films that use "this is a true story" for shock value that i think people have become desensitized to it.

after watching the movie, I researched it more than I'd ever studied any other movie and found Compliance to be quite accurate in it's portrayal. take "Sandra" for example ... during the real-life manager's interview, she was chillingly smarmy and cold-hearted, saying the girl never asked her for help, even while being shown the videotape where the girl was clutching at her and laying her head on her shoulder, crying.

watch the movie again after at least doing a bit of research and seeing the 20/20 interview video with the security footage. WHOA.

The uncensored footage is around there some where but this porn cite seems to highlight the important parts.
Beware nudity and niave nude workers. Notice that at 6:46 that when the manager walks in Nix quickly tosses the apron on the girl so she can coverup and he steps scoots back as if to hide that he was inspecting her vagina. Nix knew he was taking advantage of the situation and having fun with the girl.

Warning unsensored.

They have a whole screen size text in the beginning of the film stating that it's based on actual events. Maybe that wasn't enough clue for some people.

And people in here are saying that it's not realistic because the characters do what actual people really did. Now that kind of stupidity can't be explained away with psychology. The key part in the film is the fact that it did really happen more or less the way it is shown in the film. That's what makes this movie so good and interesting. Sure watching the behaviour of these people can make you annoyed but keep in mind you're not annoyed by the directors choises but rather what actually happened. Don't blame the movie if you can't hande reality. Audience getting annoyed doesn't mean it's a bad film. Actually it means the film was very successful in what it was trying to do.

reply

While this film may have been based on real events, it doesn't make it any less absurd and infuriating. I'm sorry, but this whole story is just ridiculous. How none of these people stood up and questioned any of the outrageous requests made by the supposed "officer" is completely beyond me. How bright do you have to be to realize that these things would never be part of any law enforcement procedure? What about maintaining some basic human dignity, despite being threatened with jail time? I understand that it's important for young, impressionable people to realize that there is much evil in this world and that they can not always trust implicitly, authority figure or not, but to make this into a film seemed much more exploitative than educational. I agree with the OP as well, the entire experience annoyed me greatly. It was little more than 90 minutes of a naked young woman being abused. That to me does not qualify as quality film making on any level. Very disappointing.

reply

Sure the people in the film are unbelievably dumb and gullible, but that's the whole point of the movie and the reason Craig Zobel made this film: what is it that makes seemingly nice people do something despicable? Why are we so scared of authority figures that we'll do anything they'll tell us without once questioning it? I think this film raises very interesting questions like "Is there an evil part in all of us that can be brought to the surface with the right coercion?" It's easy to shout at the screen and say I would never be so dumb or compliant, but that would be missing the point entirely. Many people fell for this prank in real life and there are far more disturbing instances of evil acts being committed by people "just doing what they were told by an authority figure." The most extreme example of this being, of course, the thousands of Germans who did nothing to stop the holocaust.

Here's the real tape, just to make you even madder!

reply

Marmitesandwich, thanks for posting that link. I wanted to reach in and smack the manager being interviewed. It was sickening to hear her not once take responsibility for her actions. She even denied some of it even though they were showing her the surveillance tape. Sickening!

reply

"Just because it happened doesn't make it less unrealistic and dumb"

That seems to be the leading complaint from you people.

I want to give you a minute to let that sink in.

Congratulations: you now realize you're an idiot.

reply

Super annoying to watch. I believe everyone in the audience understood the minute that guy called that he wasn't a real cop because that's not what cops do.

reply

And yet every last one of them would have bent over backwards to appease the supposed authority figure if they were in that situation. That's the point of the movie: in these situations people don't react rationally, and not once did these people question authority. You're all acting like that's a flaw when it's the damn point of the thing.

That's like getting pissed off at Breaking Bad for feeling despicable that you're rooting for someone who's becoming a villain. That's not a flaw, that's doing the job well.

reply

When did I saw it was a flaw?

reply

Watching a young woman being technically rape, and watching "responsible" adults choosing to be absolutely ignorant is annoying. I never watched the complete movie, fast forwarded through some to the interview and was still annoyed. Okay I was more angry, knowing that similar incidents have taken place all over the country and one actually got this far.

reply

yea this was stupid. would never happen. Becky woulda got out of there who needs a job that bad?

reply

Would happen. Did happen. You can be annoyed all you want, consider the characters stupid, but the fact is this story is real and very close to the true events.

reply

If anything they kind of toned DOWN some of the more stupid and horrifying aspects. As usual, reality can get away with stuff we would never accept in a movie.

What stuff did they tone down for the movie?
