Unfortunately the Spanish–American War was never fought in Spain, and Spain didn't fight in WW1 or WW2, so that portion of the globe remains unexplored.

I will admit to having been a bit confused at the beginning of the film, but I think I missed the part where they explained who they were. I just assumed the older woman was his grandmother. I realized towards the middle that I was wrong, however.

That was nothing, i rofl'ed when they stopped for a break in Spain and the woman says :" they have coke here, pretty cool". LMAO. Seriously?
shareThis is one of the reasons that they give so much credit to the fake kid. They think that Europe is so different and that he's been through some insane stuff and that's why he's so different. They believe in movies and they aren't very bright, so this is all possible in their mind.
Combining this with wanting him back so much, they accept his "memory loss" and the difference in looks. They assume X-Files and they think he's simply grown up to what he's supposed to have looked like with an added bit of messed up growth.
Only from the outside would you question this, because emotional attachments are not included when you are from the outside. They want the kid back so bad, that they actually fell for it, this is the sad truth (IN MY OPINION).
