'Spain? Isn't that, like, across the country?'
Wow. The mother wasn't too sharp, was she...?

It appears neither are you, as it was the sister who said it :P
shareBurn!
Quoting Mark Twain: “God created war so that Americans would learn geography.”
Unfortunately the Spanish–American War was never fought in Spain, and Spain didn't fight in WW1 or WW2, so that portion of the globe remains unexplored.
Language! The thing that means stuff.
I will admit to having been a bit confused at the beginning of the film, but I think I missed the part where they explained who they were. I just assumed the older woman was his grandmother. I realized towards the middle that I was wrong, however.

That was nothing, i rofl'ed when they stopped for a break in Spain and the woman says :" they have coke here, pretty cool". LMAO. Seriously?
shareThis is one of the reasons that they give so much credit to the fake kid. They think that Europe is so different and that he's been through some insane stuff and that's why he's so different. They believe in movies and they aren't very bright, so this is all possible in their mind.
Combining this with wanting him back so much, they accept his "memory loss" and the difference in looks. They assume X-Files and they think he's simply grown up to what he's supposed to have looked like with an added bit of messed up growth.
Only from the outside would you question this, because emotional attachments are not included when you are from the outside. They want the kid back so bad, that they actually fell for it, this is the sad truth (IN MY OPINION).
Back in the 90's, I worked at a travel service, anything outside the U.S. got transferred to an international booking department. I was training a class of newhires, and a middle aged lady, that was very difficult to train, raised her hand, and said she had a customer that wanted to book a car in San Francisco, she wanted to know if she should transfer it to international. I did my best not to do a spit take, and told her she could handle it. Capper to the story, a few months later, she was promoted to supervisor.
shareAgreed, typical stupid ignorant American. They know nothing about any other country and don't care to. They think only America exists and no other country has the things that Americans have. How stupid can you get where you think Coca Cola dosen't exist anywhere else but America.
shareThey're a down-on-their-luck rural family that has had problems with drugs, violence, and missing children...
Learning the details of places where fancy people go on vacation was not a priority for them.
That said, the woman knows she has been accused of covering up Nicholas's murder all through these interviews. So she's playing up details that point to her own naiveté and lack of awareness about the world. The Coke line and the "across the country" line paint a picture of her being innocent, out of her depth, and not having any idea of what she was getting into.

Sorry, I just saw your question, that took place in Oklahoma.
shareTo be fair to the sister, apart from those two statements which were made out of ignorance (which is different to stupidity), she did seem quite sharp and articulate.
And even the smartest person can say dumbest things without realising. I mean, I wouldnt call myself 'clever' but I've never thought I was stupid either, but once I was being filmed for an interview for my sister's school project and when we watched it back I'm saying something like, 'I love travelling in Europe and countries like that.' Even though I'm fully aware that Europe is not a country etc. Little stupid things like that slip out without us realising all the time, it's just that most of us don't have our words picked up by cameras.
