Disturbing scene - Tomorrowland (2015) Discussion

She was able to stop the android from killing Frank but she didn't "kill" him. After she stopped beating him and they got into the bathtub, that same android whose head she bashed in was the one that jumped onto the bathtub/rocket and was trying to pry it open. So I didn't find it disturbing. The thing was like a terminator and was clearly able to take a beating.

Are you sure? I must have missed that.

But the thing is the thing wasn't responding after she pounded it. It was, for all intents and purposes, dead at that moment. But she keeps beating the thing relentlessly.

It's like a scene made specifically for little girls who have a lot of anger against men. That's how I read it.

It just seemed way over the top and excessive.

I think they were aiming for dark humor but it backfired. She just came across as sadistic to me.

I found it more disturbing that Frank was having feelings for a twelve year old in this film.

The question you have to worry about, when beating someone with a baseball bat, especially if that person is bigger or stronger than you, is what that person might do after you STOP beating them with a baseball bat.

So the time to stop beating them is when you can be completely certain they won't do anything after you stop. The safest option is to beat them until they stop moving, then beat them some more.

That goes more than ever for Casey beating an android. She had already toppled a statue on one android and seen him get up to attack Athena. And Athena herself was hit by a truck without doing more than blink, and was perfectly capable of running the truck down afterwards. Why should she assume that this android was less resiliant?

So if she can do something that seems to stop it for the moment, she should keep doing it.

Sorry, I don't mean that Casey was, or was capable of, following the line of reasoning I mentioned. Trapped in that room, she had no time for such long and detailed thoughts before acting. So she was acting on what I believe Professor Kahneman would call system 1 thinking, and what the rest of us would call reacting on instinct.

She was not following a line of reasoning, instead she was acting on instincts that embody that line of reasoning. Her mind, then, was dominated by fear of leaving or losing the only person who knew where to run to, fear of the murderous robot, and probably hatred of the murderous robot as soon as it seemed she could stop it.

Naturally, then, she was caused to hit the robot as hard as she could, and keep hitting it until something more important happened, such as the departure of the person who knew where to run to.

(Note that the robot itself seemed to lack such instincts, otherwise it would have reflexively shot Frank as soon as she hit it, and then turned on her. I imagine it was built to serve some other purpose, and then repurposed to hunt Athena on Earth after she ran off.)

If you watch the scene again Clooney has to physically restrain her from continuing to hit the robot.

I think you're looking to justify her actions when, as another poster mentioned, the writers were looking for dark humour but instead it made her out as disturbingly bonkers (in that scene only).

Every time I kill any collection of pixels a little part of me inside dies. Nature weeps at video game genocide.

It was a brutality scene against a male for little abused girls. That's how I see it. You don't advocate once form of violence to make up for another.
