I hope they get rid of him very soon. There are enough *beep* in the show and the least thing we need is another cliché male character for Gladys to fall for. Poor bitch.

This is my first post, as i just joined yesterday from the help of my grand son. It took my two days to figure this darn thing out and even more to write this message.
Now my wife and I watch this show every Wednesday Night on Global, and are addicted. That and MadMen are the only two shows we watch apart from the NEWS. And we know another couple who watch it as well. The women both dislike Gene, but our friends husband and I like him. Now I'll tell you why.

My older brother was in the War, who is no longer with us... Bless his soul. Growing up with him after the War was extremely difficult on my parents and I. He came back a completely different man. But the first couple weeks you would never know. He came back more confident than ever. I remember wanting to be him. He always had ladies over, ( I was 14 at the time) and to a 14 year old young man, that was the 14 year old dream. But he slowly started falling apart. He was arrogant, yet confident, older women hated him, Men wanted to be him. Something though was not right. His confidence turned to cockiness. I remember finding him one morning when he was on the floor with a bottle of Whiskey next to him, and vomit on the bed. My folks both knew something was very wrong. He started having fits, seeing things, crying in his sleep, becoming violent. The cockiness was his way of pretending things were alright. He did end up getting the help he needed and ended up having a beautiful family, when cancer later took his life.

When I watch Gene on the Television I am watching my older brother. This character was written and portrayed exceptionally. Bless the writers for finally confronting PTSD. Bless you. It needed to be done. Now despite what my wife says, who is now beginning to understand, Gene is an exceptional character with exceptional depth and I really hope they keep exploring him. I hope he gets the help he needs just like my brother did.

Thank you Bomb Girls. Exceptional show. Really well done.

First of all, I love your username, oldfart. I should call myself middle-aged fart. :-) And thank you for going through the difficulties of signing up on IMDb to post this.

While I have no personal experience with anything war-related (which I should probably say, thankfully so), what you posted underlined just what I love so much about Bomb Girls, because they don't seem to shy away from touching on the gritty aspects of war and try their best to portray it realistically. I think it's not only Gene who clearly suffers from PTSD (by the way, I thought Brett Dier did a fantastic job of portraying him), his father Bob is also still dealing with the aftereffects of what WW I did to him. And even though it's not been specifically mentioned (yet?), from the amount of time we see him carrying around a whisky glass, it's obvious Bob has an alcohol problem.

Thank you so much for your post, because it makes me proud of being a fan of the show. And as to the rather rude post by Ithilfaen, sometimes I wished people would actually give their words some thought before they hit the 'Send' button. They didn't write Gene into the show just so Gladys could have someone to hook up with. And I see Gene as anything but cliché. He's a complex human being, and I'm glad they introduced him as a character, even though he's not someone you really end up liking. And I believe you're not supposed to either.

Ithilfaen, the next time you post something along these lines on a public message board, please consider that the creators, writers and actors of the show might be reading it (and I know some of them do). How would you feel if you created or portrayed the character and read something like that?
