Should have aired on PBS?

It's unfortunate that "Bomb Girls" had such poor promotion in US and aired only on the little known Reelz channel (which I have only just heard of, as Reelz is, unfortunately, unavailable in HD via Comcast) instead of PBS, where it might have been a hit. Happily, I stumbled upon the first season on Netflix streaming last week and just this evening gladly recommended it to acquaintances. Now I'm terribly sad to hear the show has been cancelled after only two seasons! (Though I'm heartened to hear about the two-hour film being produced to bring closure to the story lines.)

Do you think "Bomb Girls" might have been more popular if it had aired in the US on PBS?

reply

According to GlobalTV (the owner) they blame the US TV shows for sucking off the audience... And they will not let US folks watch the epis on line, get geographical restriction error. So they have a great interesting show, sell it to a small TV channel - Reelz in the US , don't advertise it, and then prohibit us from watching on line... In Canada it got a great following and it has a bunch of fans demanding it be put back on. Alas, 99.999% of US watchers know nothing about it. Reelz did a real poor job... You suck Reelz... My Reelz did not air it on Wednesday, they put something called X111.2 on.

Ah but the true fans are revolting and maybe there will be a movie... I would just like to watch it on line but geeze, guess it is restricted to Canadians only. Know where I can watch it? Reelz and Global restrict it. Like my Reelz channel has it on their schedule but then they replace it with something else at the last hour...

I think this would've worked on a larger cable channel. Almost no one has ever heard of Reelz. Instead of Reelz, it should have been on Hallmark or W.E, or USA.

Yeh, Reelz is a channel you have to stumble on cause it is not in the TVGuide, or my papers TV listings. I think I originally found it because of Pillars Of The Earth (which was great). And then World Without End (which was not great). I have to check the listings for it daily but then my local Reelz shows something else vs what is on the listings? Crazy.. They put a lot of paid advertising on.

I first discovered that Reelz existed because a friend recommended "Becker," so I searched for it on my DVR, and found it on Reelz.

I first discovered Reelz because of The Kennedys mini series
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1567215/ ...which was very good.
It's online on netflix now.

reply

Yes it was. I saw the Kennedys on DVD. Shame some people had to shoot it down as it was supposed to be on a bigger channel... Reelz picked it up 'cheap'.

reply

I really liked the Kennedys mini-series too. I've read quite a few books on the family, and it was really neat to see on-screen what I'd imagined in my head. In many cases, it was like seeing still photographs come to life, especially the touch-football scene.

Hopefully us fans can get it on PBS. Look how well Downtown Abbey is doing.

reply

Downton Abbey is part of Masterpiece theater productions ... Isn't it? Bomb Girls was an independent Canadian production.

When the show first came it out it was a rather big hit internationally.

I found it first on a UK station and in Britain it was very popular. In Australia as well.

The producers blew it by not getting it on a station that was not Reelz, which has probably 10 subscribers and isn't available much on any cable (including mine in the US).

But internationally I thought it had huge following when they distributed it around the world.

What did I miss here?

Surely cancellation was not based on a lousy viewing situation in America--even though that's a monster market?

Too true.

I hope the success "Murdoch Mysteries" had by being picked up by another Canadian network after their first network jettisoned them to make room for cheaper reality shows happens here.

At least there is a previous situation that succeeded by getting a new netowork to pick it up. It gives one hope. ha

Really?

Oh don't tease...getting my hopes up. haha

I do hope they try to do a film for tv though--at least.

Would love to see the film with the original cast members doing some interesting things in the war again, then have the other part of it be the characters today (or guess it probably should take place in the 80s or 90s so they won't be too old to cast the show! haha) Perhaps a 40 year reunion of the Bomb Girls could be the framework.

To see how they all turned out is what audiences love to see isn't it?

It could make a very nice film if they do it right...

reply

Or set the movie during the war, and then right before the end have title cards that say what happened to each character.

I'd like to see them celebrate when the war ends. They will have parties in the street, and welcome back loved ones (male and female), and close the bomb factory.

reply

Ah, geographical restriction...the demise of all us Canadians hoping to catch up on American programming. VPN's are the answer, for future reference.

Funnily enough, in the area where I live PBS has three channels, one of them in Spanish, they air shows from Australia, Europe and Canada dubbed in Spanish.

That's how I discovered this show, it is really good, and am surprised they haven't placed in their regular channel schedule.
