I don't remember if they gave an explanation for his exit ?

He may have been infected with Hep C during a surgery in The Way We Were. He said he was going to take whatever drug is associated with that and take a little time off. Hasn't been mentioned on the show since, and I haven't read/heard if he will be back this season.
