For us USA viewers, (I know a little about future episodes...but)
The last episode shows Joel going to buy Alex a ring. What I don't get is first he's not sure if the kids is his (I think he believes its his since he was with her last), but she has shown no indication that she wants a future with him whether its his baby or its Charlies. So why does he go to that extreme?
That's Joel I guess, always making rash decisions. He told Alex a few episodes ago that he wanted to be the baby's father, maybe he's determined to prove it to her and that he wants to commit to her. But like you said, Alex hasn't shown any feelings towards him really since she broke things off, certainly nothing that says 'propose to me.'

I think Joel from his point of view thinks the baby is his ....Whether that is true or not? We won't know until Season 5, if the writers care to share ....In Episode 18, Joel tells a soldier he loves Alex but Alex loves Charlie....So, from his point a view, Joel loves Alex and thinks the baby is his and he is trying to be a better person ( Being a Dad) then his Father....So,he buys Alex the ring.........With Joel assuming that is the Father when he was last person to have sex with Alex....That is not always the case ......It is when Alex ovulates is the key! Charlie has sex with Alex ......next day Alex ovulates.... Then Joel has sex with Alex? .....Who is the Biological Father?....Sperm can live inside a women body for up three days .....So, Charlie could have a head start......A women (most women) only ovulate once a month ......So, having sex does not mean a women is going get pregnant! ....lol
So because Joel loves Alex and thinks the baby is his, he thinks that would be reason enough for her to say yes? Lol

Yes, from his point of view .....But, Alex point of view she loves Charlie ....Alex want someone (Charlie) who wants kids.....From the pilot, Charlie told Alex he wants kids! ....So, when Alex smiled at the end of Season 3 Episode 14 when Charlie was playing cards with Kids that had Henry organs and in Episode 15 when Alex smiled at the end when Charlie touch her belly & she saw Charlie at the beach holding a baby....We knew, Alex was going to pick Charlie....
