I can't figure out...

What the significance of the painting of Rue on the floor is, during the individual assessments. I get that it was to shake up Katniss, but the paint pots were still around her, so it was a Tribute that painted it. What would the point of that have been? To show off their painting skills? How is that going to belp?

reply

It was to shake up the Gamesmakers, to remind them that Katniss's attempt to honour Rue sparked a riot the previous year and got the head Gamesmaker in trouble. Peeta painted it. Shaking up Katniss was an accident (and, in the book, the Gamesmakers covered it up before Kat came in).

Ah, thank you! I haven't read the books yet. I watched the first movie on a whim just to see what the hype was about and didn't expect to end up captivated.

That explanation dovetails perfectly with what I figured the reasoning was behind Katniss stringing up the Crane effigy. And I thought it was probably Peeta that painted it, as he had the artistic talent to pull it off. Peeta or the "Masters-of-Disguise" Morphlings, who would have absolutely no reason to do it.

Also, anyone know if there is a special reason Peeta is wearing nail polish at the End-of-Tour party at the Capitol?

reply

IN the book the characters' "prep team" is always wanting to do wierd things to their appearance. This may be left over from a longer scene about altering Peeta's.

reply

its to show what we are all thinking-that Peeta is really a closet gay like Josh in real life

reply

Read the book and u will know who painted it and why!!! Your missing out if u don't read the books...they leave good stuff out of the movies..

reply

I wish the movie would've shown the training scores. They add to the impact the painting and the hang-man had on the game maker judges.

reply

But the impact it had on the judges was moot, the scores were moot. The Tributes were not playing the Capitol's Game, they were playing their own. All except the Careers and they were probably never approached by Haymitch and his company of secret rebels. From the moment Katniss and Peeta entered the Arena the plan kicked in to get Katniss and as many of the Tributes as possible out and escape to District 13. Why spend screen time on scores that meant nothing.

reply

The job of the judges is to rate the skills of unknown tributes for the decadents of the Capitol to bet on. In the Second Quarter Quell this whole ritual was useless because the victors were famous and their skills were well known.

reply

Of course it was not necessary. It was form because they had always done it
