I liked it. But not nearly as much.

Let's start with the entire omission of the 1995 monstrosity. This is my opinion on 1976 vs. 2013.

To break it down, the characters made the difference since the sequence of events was exactly the same (plus an element or to that brought it into the 21st century).

CARRIE WHITE: There's no comparison to Sissy Spacek as Carrie. She was everything Carrie was supposed to be. Awkward, mousy, unkempt, and completely without any sense of
self.
Moretz showed some great acting chops but in my opinion was too cute for the role.

MARGARET WHITE: Tough call. In my opinion, Julianne Moore could take on the role of an adolescent black boy and somehow she would become perfect in the part. But still, Piper Laurie plays the religious zealot a little better. Her empty eyes and eerie smile, even her singsongy recitation of scripture made you completely unsure of whether you were looking into the face of God, or of the devil himself. Piper rules.

Coach Collins. I love Betty Buckley. I always have. So I guess I am biased. Because truthfully I like Judy Greer too. Just not as much. If there's a deal breaker, I'd have to say that Judy Greer can only play Judy Greer. She brings nothing at all different to any role she plays. Only with a different name and color of hair. She's a cute personality and admittedly, she brightens any screen, big or small with it. But that's it. 1976 again.

CHRIS HARGISON:
Okay here we go. I love the villains who make you enjoy hating them. Not the ones who just annoy you. Nancy Allen's Chris made you want to knock the $#!+ out of her. Doubleday's Chris made you wanna shove her face through a window, and watch her live to suffer it a little while before she clocked
out. It was a precious moment. Doubleday wins.

SUE SNELL and TOMMY ROSS I can only compare as a pair. And I gotta go with the new guys. These were characters fairly understated in both versions. Both felt badly about ways Carrie had been treated, but the '76 duo were more about redeeming themselves, while the 2013 guys were genuinely trying to give Carrie a boost to the ego.

THE PROM SCENE:
Way tough call. Loyalty always wants to remain with the original. And the original prom scene was beautifully hellish. The look on the face and in the eyes of Spacek said she has HAD it. Prom night 2013 had its own standouts. Electrocutions, crushed by folding bleachers, trampled by stilettos. Sometimes everybody wins!

All in all, for me, 2013 just loses out for a few simple reasons. Carrie's too cute, and her command of her telekinetic powers included waves and hand movements that rendered those powers akin to using "the Force."
