this film is a mirror
as with any other work of art (i use that term in the literal sense) that focuses on what society considers gross/wrong/filthy, this film holds up a mirror to those who view it. what you get out of it is what you give it. i'm seeing an insane amount of negative critisicm towards this film and its mostly based out of complete childishness.
People dismiss Joe as a "whore" which is so immature and idiotic considering that this film is in fact called "Nymphomaniac". The fact of the matter is that people LOVE to hate Von Trier. When people talk about his work they use the word "pretentious" over and over and over. Whats funny is that most people who use that word are almost always extremely pretentious themselves.
If you think this film is pretentious you need to crawl back out of your own *sshole and check yourself. This is a film that seeks to portray a taboo premise and it does so under a mature and realistic lens. I don't know what the hells wrong with you people but I found myself relating to/caring for Joe and the retelling of her excruciating life story. The fact that people couldn't sympathize with her is the reason this movie exists. Because people are disgusting and they will judge anything and everything except themselves.
So keep hating on this movie like the sheep you are. Those of us with minds of our own will make up our own minds. And I'm not at all saying you HAVE to love this movie I'm just telling off those who blindly hate it.
For those of you that want more polarizing art that will make the sheep's skin crawl in agony at the reflection of themselves, i'd suggest checking out the tv program The Heart, She Holler. Its more of a comedy but its a dark and haunting dissection of the current state of American society and the writing is incredible (if you're not a pompous *beep*
