Then at least she'd be paid for it!! I know that wasn't the point of the character but still. The character ADORED sex. You'd think she would get off on being an escort. But I guess that would take away her own personal pleasure side of things, since when you're a prostitute, you'd have to do what they like.

While I think that would have been an interesting spin - and I believe would have related Joe even more to some of the classic literary characters' falls from grace that von Trier used as inspiration - I think it would have defeated the purpose of Joe. To her, her sexual drive was her version of breathing. She didn't rely on it to live socially because it was just who she was as a person.
shareNo, the movie wasn't about sex, it was about obsession, addiction etc, like the many movies about drug users, deeply religious, world-class athletes etc etc--people with one burning drive which keeps them going to the exclusion of almost all else.
Joe's obsession was sex, but as you said, it had to be on her terms, not anyone else's.
