Okay, I'm sorry but it has to be asked... why do you think Stacy Martin was cast as Young Joe?

First off, she looks very little like Charlotte Gainsbourg at all, which might be hard to find, but there's absolutely zero similarity. They might as well have cast anybody.

Second, she has all the acting ability and charm of a dead cat.

Could it have been that she was the only actress willing to do the explicit sex scenes? Could they honestly not find anyone else?

I kept feeling like she was in the middle of trying to remember her lines, or reading them off some distant cue card. She simply wasn't real or very present in the film.

What gives??

I think Von Trier is playing with a lot of not-very-sharp film-goers. OBVIOUSLY, he realized the two actresses had different colored eyes at least. It doesn't seem to occur to a lot of people that the whole story Joe is telling might not be completely true (and Stellan Skarsgaard's character similarly might be lying about being a virgin). There is a lot of deep ambiguity and playful mystery to this movie that I personally find intriguing, but it seems to hurt a lot of people's little brains, so they start throwing around the few big words they know like "pretentious" and "self-indulgent" whether or not they really apply here.

There are plenty of attractive women that would have taken on a role this explicit in Europe or even in the huge American porn industry. Staci Martin is prettier than most and she does have the BODY of a young Charlotte Gainsbourg. I found her acting passable at least.
