He loves his wrongheaded rationalist characters - men who use logic to comfort and reassure nervous women, but who end up being overwhelmed by the awesome cruelty of the universe and suffer horribly. I don't know what compels Lars to keep portraying this trope but he seems to view women as being connected to the mystery of nature, while men are arrogant sinners who are ultimately devoured by natural forces they cannot understand. Messed up stuff.
