I attended a screening this past January in Long Beach CA. The version I saw was the R rated cut. Minus a few obviously incomplete VFX shots, I would assume this was the intended version previously scheduled to open on January 2nd, 2015. The last time I posted my spoiler heavy review, it got deleted from the forums, so for anyone interested in spoilers or whatnot, PM me with your questions and I'll tell you what you want to know.
Did I think it was good? Personally, I didn't think it was all that bad, however I feel that all the tinkering and re-shoots only complicated what little good the movie had going for it. Keep in mind, this was not the first (and probably not the last) time it has gone back behind the cameras for additional tweaking and whatnot. Back in late 2014 when the film first wrapped, they ran into problems with some of the VFX and looping during post production, as well as shooting a whole new ending. I'm not sure what the origional ending was, but the one I saw was very similar to The Uninvited. It makes reference to the Defeo murders, but interestingly enough, The Lutz family is never mentioned. For the most part, it acts as a stand alone movie, which in my opinion works to its advantage. All in all it was decent, and i hope that after all the trouble the production had, it does good Box Office. Some may like it more than I did. My only real negative remark was that all the messing around Dimension did was painfully obvious while watching it.
1. How was Bella Thorne? Was she in pretty much all the scenes? 2. How many scares are there? 3. There was a jumping out of the window scene from the original trailer, who was that? 4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIWWyYO-h5E were all the scenes in the film in that tv spot? 5. Was the test screening crowded? What was the audience's reaction when the film ended? Did you hear people say "It sucked" or "Great".
Yes, that scene was in the movie, but again....the Lutz family was never mentioned by name. When Belle is reading the book, we hear her voice over and mentioned "The Family" but never once were their names actually mentioned.
