Anyone know why there was a half-burnt American flag in the final scene as Collin Ferrel's character is walking down the hill to deliver his script?

When Marty is reading Billy's journal it shows that Billy spent one day just watching the shadow of that flag, then the next passage in the journal says "Note to self, don't burn the neighbors flag." Then Marty looks out the window and see's that Billy did end up burning the flag.

Phew. I was expecting someone to say it's disgraceful to burn the flag even in a movie.

I once watched this anarchist burn american flag, and I must say, it burned up so fast, he was surprised and dropped it, you could see it in his face. I don't think flag would half burn, it would burn out entirely in seconds. But I guess you have to show piece of it, otherwise it'd just be a chared pole
