Lesbian vibes...

Is it just me or does Samantha come off as a,and I quote from TVtropes.org because they said it best, "a self-hating closeted lesbian who uses the internet to fantasize about dating her best friend and acting on her hatred of jocks"?

I love mankind. It's the people I can't stand.

That's not something I noticed but maybe I just missed it. If it was there I don't think it was intended. Any parts of the movie you could reference for me?

reply

I have to admit I could feel those vibes too! Especially when the newsreporter is interviewing Samantha en she says something like 'I was hurt, angry, jealous'. It seemed to me like she was jealous at that guy (Josh?) rather than at Lindsay. It's obvious that they're just friends, but the way Samantha expressed herself sometimes made it seem like there was something more, so I would blame it on the dialogue.

reply

Yes. Totally got that. I was like if this was a different movie Sam may have been in love with Taylor. I really thought she was gonna come out and say it when the journalist was interviewing her.

I hope you like feminist rants because that's kind of my thing.

It's really obvious when you watch the movie a second time with this in mind (did I just admit to watching this more than once?!)

Samantha and Taylor lying together on Samantha’s bed:

Taylor: “Hey, one good thing did happen on Cliquesters today, I talked to this guy named James, you should have seen what he wrote me, it was really smart and funny.”

Samantha, happy/embarrassed: “Let’s not talk about boys. We could rent a movie, you could sleep over …”

All the conflict points between Samantha and Taylor involve Taylor dismissing Samantha in favor of Scott, followed by Samantha bashing Scott, with Taylor sometimes responding by insulting Samantha's love life.

Samantha creates the James profile because Taylor chooses to blow off their weekly date at the mall so she can stay home and wait for Scott to message her.

Samantha spreads the STD rumor because Taylor claims to be in love with "James", and a minute later accepts Scott's invitation to the spring fling, breaking her previous commitment to go with Samantha and Cheyenne.

The rest of the time Samantha uses the James profile to defend Samantha's reputation on line, and write her schmoopy love notes.

More quotes:

Samantha starts to admit she’s the one who created the James profile.
“Taylor, this is really hard …”
Taylor: “... cause, you know, Scott reads that stuff.”
Samantha: “Wait, that’s what you’re worried about now? Scott?”
Taylor: “Yeah, I’m worried about Scott.”
Samantha: “Who cares what he thinks Taylor! Where has Scott been? Nowhere! You even said yourself, he’s been ignoring you. Now all of a sudden you care what he thinks?”

Samantha: “Maybe we should forget school today, you wanna ditch, I’ll ditch with you.”
Taylor: “No, I wanna talk to Scott.”
Samantha: “Of course. Look, you should just get Scott to give you a ride home too, because I’m done trying to be your friend. Have a nice life, Taylor.”

That's funny & kinda weird because I never really look for things like that in movies and I did not pick up anything like that at all in this movie. I thought samantha was just being overly protective of her friend taylor and trying to keep her from getting hurt by Scott, because in the movie it was said/hinted that i think samantha used to be in a relationship with scott and he hurt her by having sex with her and never speaking to her again. And something like that could really hurt a girl, so of course then samantha wanted to keep taylor away from scott once she knew she was interested in him because she did not want her to get hurt in the same way she did.

But I must say, I thought it was REALLY weird what lengths she went to to keep taylor away from him, honestly who the hell would do that? I actually had a funny feeling about samantha in this movie, especially how she kept freaking out & screaming angrily about scott AND when she just flips taylor the bird and makes her get out of her car as if it was nothing! It's like she couldn't let it go! And Im sorry but I do not understand how all the above conversations and what not make samantha a lesbian.

Samantha hooked up with one of Scott's friends and he pretty much dumped her afterwords. She thinks Scott is just like his friend and is "trying to protect Taylor".

Typically I don't pick up on romantic vibes in movies that aren't like thrown in your face but as you said the legnths that Samantha was willing to go to keep Taylor away from Scott were over the top and weird.

I personally think that Taylor's obsession over Scott and her flipping back and forth between the two "guys" brought the movie down. I didn't think that her crush on Scott was unrealistic but it was a little too much especially when she was just talking about how she likes "james".

reply

That or the immaturity of wanting your friends to hate who you hate. Taylor hated Scott and his group and here was her best friend trying to cozy up to him.

samantha was definitely a lesbian

I felt a lesbian vibe too. It's why Samanatha's first thing to do with the fake profile was flirt with Taylor and speak like she was in love with her. She got jealous of Scott because she wants Taylor to be attracted to her, the whole he'll be a jerk to you thing was a cover. It's also why Samantha wants Taylor to sleep over so she can try and make a move on her but she's too afraid of being rejected and she doesn't want the whole school to know she's a lesbian.
