Problems of middle class white kids

I know bullying can be a problem for a lot of teens. Being physically or sexually harassed is a serious problem for some people. But I think this movie shows that there are also a lot of teens who are really just selfish and weak.

In my experience online gossip isn't taken that seriously. There are mean things said on the internet, but most teenagers just see it as a minor annoyance. Also I've had my Facebook account hacked many times and most people I knew in high school really didn't care when my status said something stupid because of it.

Trying to kill yourself because of gossip, whether its on the internet or at school is a very selfish decision, especially when you have people around who love and support you. Having mean things said about you isn't suffering, yet the message of the movie seems to say that it is. Most young, healthy, white, middle class Americans haven't suffered. They just make stuff up to be upset about. Suffering is not having a clean glass of water in months or not being able to get an education.

I thought the girl in this was a spoiled little brat but the mother is also pretty bad. A parent should be supportive of their child, but they should also know when to tell their child to stop whining and start behaving responsibly. The mother here just coddles her daughter and perpetuates the victim hood complex she has.

I completely agree. I watched the movie because I wanted to see if it would present bullying as a problem worth attention. It failed laughably. Realistically, the main character was just sad about not being able to date the boy she wanted to. She had fair-weather friends and took to heart what was said by a girl who doesn't affect her life in any way. Though, the worst part of the whole thing was that the mother sheltered her entirely too much. When that failed, she sought legislation to protect her daughter's feelings and that was supposed to be seen as a reasonable solution.

Yes, the problems of these high school kids pale in comparison to the poverty and profound suffering that exists in this world. But that should not minimize the pain she experienced. Adolescents are vulnerable and impressionable -- to have an entire school ridiculing you is not a simple annoyance, it's an attack on your identity. Embarrassment is one of the strongest emotions, and even if it's unlikely that an entire school would become involved in something like this (except, perhaps, in a really small town), the point is that whether it involves two or two hundred people, to her this was a devastating blow to an already insecure teenager. The isolation created by that sense of abandonment is enough to throw someone into a deep depression. And depression causes people to lose perspective. I doubt she was analyzing the consequences of her suicide attempt while crying her brain out.

Most young, healthy, white, middle class Americans haven't suffered. That's absolutely true. And most of them lose sight of the fact that compared to the rest of the world, the immature drama of high school life is petty and sickening. But that still doesn't mean that they're immune to the most basic of human emotions.

Depression is a medical illness that needs to be treated. It doesn't respond to "grow up" or "stop being so selfish." We don't tell diabetics that they should just make some more insulin. Just because medicine has not yet worked out the complexities of mental illness does not mean that it does not exist.

Also, the OP is forgetting the father dumped their family. No it's not poverty but is poverty worse than children being raped or the gas chambers? No. But it doesn't take away from poverty being true suffering. There could always be worse. Having all your limbs cut off from infection for instance.

Maybe her self esteem was low (and the mother's) due to the stress of the father finding them all worthless enough to leave them.

But yet Football is important isn't it? It's even on the news, following tragedies etc. Not that I am against football but does it belong on the news? But of course that is not what this is about, I know.

I'm sorry but that is a false equivalency. Major Depression is an illness, but unlike Diabetes it does not require medical treatment. Sometimes therapy whether individual or group can work. You can't treat diabetes with group therapy. So your comparison is way off.

Taylor wasn't depressed as much as she was an entitled, spoiled, drama queen.

Major depression is an illness that can be treated with medication. Coming from someone who has taken an anti-depressant for the last 20 years, I can firmly attest to the fact that medication is sometimes required for major depressive episodes.

to have an entire school ridiculing you

Hyperbole should be left out of serious critiques. It was a small group of kids. The girl deserved it and could have easily avoided it. There were giant X's(delete buttons) on every comment she was upset about. She could have made her page private, blocked some people, and just ignored the a$$hats who were hazing her, like every kid pre-pussification of the country.

This entire film was a failure. There was no suffering besides what she not only deserved, but allowed and helped flourish.

Pathetic.

People would argue trying to kill yourself at all (regardless of reason) when you've got people left behind who'll be mourning is a selfish decision. The state of being suicidal is treated as a serious psychological condition... a person lacks control at that point and needs help.

Taylor and the mother improved a lot by the end.

watching the movie i think the problem is not with the person being bullied, it is not that they are sensitive, that they are weak or that they get offended easily..

its the people around them who ACTUALLY BELIEVE in what they see online. seriously. i wonder if people ate stupid pills, had kids and made the younger generation dumb as a bag of hammers.

Oh come on. Killing yourself is not selfish, it's the best thing a dumbass can do (and yes, there are 7 billion of them). No one cares about the lifeless family members and worthless friends who are left without you, it's called life and that's it. There's absolutely nothing wrong about committing a suicide, there's everything wrong about staying alive.

You don't need to be racist though.
