Meaning of the title

The title seems to be intended as a reference to the phrase said by Lambert in the movie about living with a woman: "You never know if yours will be the best offer." There are, of course, other situations it can be tied to (considering that the movie involves an auctioneer), but Lambert's response certainly does stand out and appears to be deliberately emphasized in the narrative.

But exactly what is implied by that phrase (and the title) in the context of the story? Is it supposed to imply that Virgil somehow "lost" this "auction" by coming up with an "offer" that was short of being "the best"? Or is it something else?

In short, why is this movie called "The Best Offer"? What "offer" is it referring to?

"The best offer" was also the code phrase that Oldman used to signal Billy to embark on one of their frauds. In that light the title could be a tables-turned ironic sort of thing, in that Oldman was attempting to possess something beautiful (Claire) who was actually a fake.
