Very predictable

[spoiler] Don't get me wrong, it is a great movie, but I thought it was predictable. Maybe because I had watched this movie a few years ago, with Nicolas Cage, that has almost the same kind of scam. Even so, the movie is still good: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325805/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_36

Not only predictable, also very old fashioned. Boring and a bit silly movie.

I agree - so predictable, so heavily signalled... And about 40 mins too long!

Two points:

1. I did not see what was coming until very near the end and I'm normally good at predicting these sorts of things. The bit with the android -- whatever they called it -- threw me and I was expecting the movie to take some sort of dark David Lynch direction. Especially with that strange savant woman, reminiscent of The Dwarf from Twin Peaks.

2. Once it was over I did flash back to Matchstick Men probably for the same reasons you did.

I did enjoy this movie though -- the direction was reminiscent of Hitchcock which also led me to think it was going to take a much weirder twist.

I wondered if anyone else felt it had a Hitchcockian feel to it. I thought it did, but then I thought maybe it was just the music that made it seem that way. I thought the music was very reminiscent of Hitchcock's films.

Similiar. I thought at first she might be the android herself, leaving parts of herself scattered about, perhaps in hopes of finding a human she could trust to repair and care for her in a unique way, the way he treasured his secret collection.

I think it could of worked as a movie just fine. Our first computers were made of gears that did computations, so only a small leap of logic required.

I was probably a little slow,
But the moment Sturgess' girlfriend showed up all jealous it was over.
My only question at that point was how many people were involved. I kinda figured he had wronged the girl's mother many years ago and this was not only a scheme to steal his art, but revenge.

Come to think of it, there might be more to it than I even know right now. I'm actually thinking it couldn't be just as simple as a plan to steal his art, could it?

reply

I was even slower. When the fake Claire said she wouldn't sell those things any more, I got it.. But I didn't think Bill was involved until V turned the dancer painting over and saw bill's words..
The plan is really cruel.
Trust people? Think again...

For me it was the private dinner scene 80 min in, when they talked about authenticity and forgery.

This thread already exists (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1924396/board/thread/223954097?d=223954097#223954097. It's good to check first.

I agree that it was totally predictable. I was hoping for for something more clever but it took the tried-and-true route. I was watching carefully when he lets her into his secret room to see if he would at least block the keypad from her view, but of course he didn't. It always strikes me as wildly improbable that the perpetrators of these long cons never seem to imagine that all their hard work can be for nothing if the mark simply takes some very natural precautions at critical moments which of course they never do.

Even still, I thought the movie was good enough. It just could have been a lot better.

I saw it coming from the moment I heard her on the phone using a totally different voice (i.e. forceful and confident, not whiny and timid) talking about how she was dealing with Virgil and the valuation. Still, it was fun to see it all unfold.

There are many, many variations on predictable movies like this. I think the idea is simply to enjoy a new twist, the particular style, the music, the visuals, etc.

Couldn't agree more.
