Question about the multiverse

The characters can only travel to realities where the (identical) box exists, so doesn't that mean that these realities must all be very similar? Dessen must exist in all of them and they must have peaceful societies with good education systems, advanced technology and chemistry, a stable climate and geology, the same laws of physics, etc. If these realities are very similar, wouldn't they all require a very similar history, and therefore be happening at roughly the same time? How it it possible that there's a box in a virgin rainforest, or buried underground, or a box existing in prehistory with dinosaurs (or whatever they were) wandering around?

I could be wrong, but I don't think the book had such outlandish alternate realities.

Is that travel rule part of the book or was it spelled out in the most recent episode?

I think you can probably get creative with "uncertainty" and create some principal that suggests that the box comes into existence in timelines where it will exist or that the act of traveling to a timeline causes the box to exist in that timeline. I mean it's fiction and you can't build a box to travel the multiverse, so you can kind of bend the rules.

I'm with you on the latter, which would moot the former, from my pov.

The show doesn't or hasn't explained it, so all we have to go on is that because the box exists -- now -- it must exist in all parallel realities. However, the invention of the box, the "when" per parallel world, could come into play, but that would cause more problems trying to explain something that the show hasn't revealed/explored as of yet.

That's not how it works in the show (or in real-life Quantum Mechanics according to at least one theory; if going by the Everett interpretation.) There is only one box created by Dessen. Each time someone uses that box to go into an alternate reality, it manifests a box there as well as it manifests that reality. In other words, as soon as they think of the reality they want to go to and open that door, that reality becomes real as does the box in that reality.
