Deleted material would have made it better

I am a proud owner of the DVD and seeing special features, I wonder why all that was cut? The released version is only 105mins and if everything would have been included it would still be within a 120mins or so length.

There would have been more build up. Milo's trip to Italy, his relationship with Atticus, Felix's disappearance, tension between the senator and Cassia's parents etc. One significant character they cut altogether was a crazy, fortune telling "priestess" who tried to warn Cassia's dad about the disaster.

Also the scene where Milo and Cassia escape the party and ride to the hills was originally longer. Can't imagine why it was edited shorter as this was the scene where the two fell in love, after all.

Because none of it mattered. Everybody, absolutely everybody we saw in the film died. Most disaster movies at least have some survivors. Heck even in Cloverfield at least one of the main characters made it out. At the end of this one I was left asking myself what the point of the entire movie was.

I'm so ugly...that's ok 'cause so are you.

Um, it was the best choice that everyone died. If Milo and Cassia would have managed to outride the volcano, I'd assume you would be commenting how mawkish and undaring the ending was. If only Cassia had survived people would moan about "bullsh!t Titanic ripoff" and letting only Milo live would have not worked either. Men are expected to die as heroes in disaster movies.

(spoiler)

Only maybe feasible solution is that the horse would have managed to escape and taken a watery eyed, grateful glance back to the town before they showed M&C frozen in time.

That's kind of my point. The likelihood of someone surviving was minimal, so what was the point of making the whole movie. I personally went because I wanted to see the depiction of the eruption, which I thought was awesome, but it's almost a waste to try to put any human drama there when there's no realistic chance of anyone surviving. Of course they never got us to really care about any of the main characters so it hardly matters.
