Unwatchable

I rented this tonight, forgetting that I had already tried to watch it once awhile ago, and didn't make it more than 15 minutes in then. It really is a forgettable movie.

I got through the first 15 minutes, really trying to get into it, but I quickly lost interest. I dunno what it is? I really want to like this movie since I have had an obsession with the story of Pompeii when I first heard about it in grade school... But this movie is awful. It reminds me too much of Gladiator with Russell Crowe, but so much worse.

I've already paused the movie twice to see how much time is left. I'm almost half through it right now. It's slow and cumbersome...just not grabbing my attention. If I hadn't spent $6 on it, for the second time, I'd turn it off.

For god sake the movie was directed by freaking Paul W.S. Anderson, what did you think you were getting? I watched this movie for fight scenes and decent effects (what it was really about). Anyone that has seen his films (Resident Evil franchise, Alien vs Predator) knows this is his thing and to expect anything more than action and effects is silly.

It was certainly a little light on plot, and Kiefer Sutherland's character was the most hammy, cliched movie villain I've seen in a long time, but I thought it was much better than expected. The sets were very detailed and realistic (not necessarily speaking about authenticity, but more 'look and feel') and the visual effects were pretty spectacular. The fight scenes were a little tame, but perhaps that's just because I've just finished watching all 4 seasons of Spartacus ;-)

I thought the cast did a reasonable job (apart from Sutherland, whose over the top performance was verging on the ridiculous) and the ending surprised me, as they didn't go for the totally unrealistic happy ever after. All in all, I thought it was watchable, and I'm not the least bit ashamed to add it to my collection of historical epics. I'd watch it again.

I only finished watching because of the landscape cgi and costumes.

Its not good. But i wouldn't call it unwatchable. Its cheesy, hammy and over the top. But i don't find it remotely sleep inducing as something like Ang Lee Hulk or worse yet Manos the hands of fate.

yep. this movie was "awful" , to say the least...
