Who were those creepy people in the gold masks, in the arena?
Even their chant sounded creepy. What was their deal.

shareI've seen that before, but I got a kick out of how they decided at the last minute to have this staged slaughter....Yet these guys spoke in perfect unison as if they practiced the spiel all week
shareSince no one who knows answered, here's my impression - was it supposed to be like the 'deus ex machina' play trope, where key points and reveals are spoken by a group. (god to machine). Familiar to Greek plays, and Shakespeare?
They were creepy.
Hopefully, someone who knows more about Greek plays will have a better answer.
"Deus ex machina" has nothing to do with the Greek chorus, or with plot points and reveals being given out.
And it does not mean "God to machine", it means "God from the machine". It refers to a plot device where a complex problem in a story is suddenly resolved by the unexpected intervention of a new character or event.
When it seems like there is no way out, when the situation is at its worst, and then suddenly there's something that brings about a resolution or a happy ending, it's like God intervened to fix everything. But it often implies a lack of creativity on the part of the author.

They were the Greek Chorus. A group of performers in the plays of classical Greece who commented on the dramatic action. They sang or spoke their lines in unison and often wore masks. They offered background and summary information intended to help the audience follow the performance.
