I don't know anything about that show, but the show in the movie is clearly supposed to be American Idol, where they intentionally show people who are "not all there" singing poorly and being ridiculed and humiliated by a bunch of talentless judges. Also, most of the contestants, even the ones with good voices, aren't particularly talented. Most of them can't write songs and can't play any instruments. It's an insult to the people who grind it out all their lives to be able to play music professionally at any level.
shareYep you are exactly right.
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014... a tremendously great and talented actor.
Have you ever sat down and thought about the logistics of running the auditions for those types of shows?
American Idol boasts that it receives over 10000 entries at each of their 3 auditions each season. At an average of 3 minutes per entry, you're looking at 90,000 minutes (1,500 hours) of audition time. Obviously, the hosts aren't listening to people sing for 1500 hours, so there must be a selection process involved. Considering that the auditions are usually handled in a weekend, we're looking at hundreds of people who control who gets to audition and who gets to go home.
So, if the point of the show is to find talented people and prop them up in front of the world, then why do people like William Hung get pushed through? He can't sing. He can't perform. He's absolutely horrible when it comes to musical talent. And yet he was able to get through to the audition. What semi-talented person lost their chance to perform and perhaps get their break, just so America could point and laugh at the awkward Asian guy?
The entire premise of the show is invalidated and thus the truth about the "reality" portion of the reality show is revealed. It has nothing to do with finding talented people and giving them a chance at fame. It's about providing bland, manageable, tasteless, worthless, cheap entertainment for the masses and raking in as much money as possible. We point and laugh at some stranger and Simon Cowell makes more money in a year than the overwhelming majority of the working class make in 5 lifetimes.
The fact that you like reality tv and don't understand only illustrates you're part of the problem. These aren't talent shows. They're bad karaoke. That's all they are. Anyone can sing, anyone! It's not a talent. Some sing better than others but it's not a talent. A talent is learning to do something you're not natually born with. Playing an instrument, writing a song, etc. these are talents. So yes, shooting a bunch of vacuous, self-serving *beep* whose only goal in life is to be rich and famous really would be doing the world a favour.
shareAgreed with everything until you made up your own definition of "talent". It means nearly the exact opposite of what you said.
shareits pointed out in the movie. they are glorified karaoke contests. the contestants only require a fraction of the talent needed to make good music, and the judges make fun of people who clearly have something wrong with them. there is a lot of other things wrong with talent shows. that is just what i remember from the film. though TBH i dont have a problem with talent contests as long as they arent making fun of people with problems. sure they may not find the best musicians but they do let some voices get heard that otherwise wouldnt. but thats just me.
shareWell whats the talent of any show in the whole world lets say 5 years ago?
