Do I need to see the original MADAGASCAR movie to enjoy/understand this?

You'd need to have at least seen the third one to understand the circus scenes at the beginning/end of the movie, and to understand who Julian and Mort are.

But that's only two scenes so not really, they fill you in on everything else.

The original Madagascar movie made it seem like the penguins have never been to Antarctica. They were all set on getting there and when they finally arrived their response was "this sucks."

Good point!
I also didn't like that the baby penguins had their adult voices. I understand why, but it was a bit disjointing.
