How long does it take to get a location?

Does it really take more than an hour? She was on the phone for over and hour and they still couldn't trace the number.

reply

The cops have successfully traced my number twice...took under two minutes each time.

reply

were you on a prepaid/untraceable cell phone, a contract phone, or a land line?

reply

what the heck is a "prepaid/untraceable"? trac phone is a cheapie, they aren't going to add a fine paranoid feature like "untraceability".

cell phones can be triangulated as fast as the computer can get a ping off a couple of towers.

Lmfao. Im mad at myself that i even tried

reply

That bothered me a bit too.
I'm pretty sure even prepaid phones are required to have gps trackers per FCC.

reply

no because that would be illegal for them to just check up on you and know where you are at all times, without your knowledge or consent, or permission from a judge. of course if you're calling 911 they have to know where you are, but not if you're just relaxing at home, which is why the fcc would require gps on prepaid phones, or phones at all, which it doesnt. that would be like a person on house arrest having an ankle bracelet, except you werent arrested for anything

reply

It was a disposable phone....They don't have GPS tracking. It's just a cheap piece of *beep* you buy and run out of time or whatever. Never have used one, or at least owned one, but I could imagine it's really low grade which is pretty much use it and chuck it

reply

Just FYI, I use a Tracfone and it works perfectly well. Not a smart phone, but I don't need that. I just need a phone to be a phone. Their phones are major brands; just not the most modern devices. But they are comparatively cheap and work.

If it's landline or have GPS chip then it pretty much instant. If you have to triangulate a moving phone then it could take longer. But they should have been able to see where the phone was going by the triangulation. You can locate a phone within 3/4 mile by triangulation and with a helicopter that would have made it easier. So this movie was ridiculous. DEA has used triangulation to locate drug smugglers and terrorists using disposable phones. Of course FCC requires all phones to have GPS by 2018.
