Is this movie related to The Number 23 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481369)? The plot appears in a somewhat similar fashion, except in The Number 23 Carrey's character turns out to be the novel's author.

It has nothing to do with the Number 23. This is based on a true story which happened in Poland. The author David Grann has written a piece about it which you can find in his collection The Devil And Sherlock Holmes.
