The beginning (spoilers)

I'm just curious to know how people feel they would have reacted in the fathers position at the beginning. I don't think I could ever forgive Liz for what she did to that baby but I hope I would have enough courage to understand that she did what she had to in order to save the mothers life, even if it did make ever looking at her again too painful. I think the vengeance they took on her was a bit extreme (shooting at her children) because whatever she had done would have been the wrong thing in their minds.

I think, in time, I would forgive her. She did the only thing she knew to do. What if she didn't do anything and just sat there and let them both die? Would that have been better? I guess, according to the Reverend, it would've because God would've decided. Either way, Liz knew it was a "no win" situation that had to be decided immediately. She did what she thought was best considering her options. Ask yourself this: What would YOU have done in her shoes?

reply

Yeah, I think my logical mind would understand but I don't think my emotional mind could ever get over the idea of her crushing that little skull.. I don't think I would have been able to do what she did but know that would most likely result in the death of them both and most likely in a far more gruesome manner! Either way, I'm glad I had my baby a couple of months ago and didn't watch this pregnant!

Yeah, it's a very emotional thing, especially something like that with a baby. If she left them both alone and didn't anything, not only could it have been far more gruesome but also be a far more painful and slow death. I saw "Alien" at the theatre, in '79', a month or so before my daughter was born. Imagine MY thoughts...ooooweee!!! πŸ˜²πŸ˜‰

You think suffocating in the womb is more gruesome and painful than having your skull crushed?

reply

I think it was the parents' decision to what should've happened to the baby. And having one's skull crushed is far more excruciating than perhaps slitting the mom's throat or wrist.

I think a part of what it showed was the strength and wisdom Liz had to do the sensible and logical thing. The mother or father may well not have had that ability which would have ended in the death of both mother and child. As it was, the couple could likely have had another child. It was tragic, but that's life.

God certainly would not swoop in and take action. Both would have died. This is a recurring theme throughout the movie. God's intervention in our lives ( or misinterpretation thereof)
