Theme song

What was wrong with the original? Nothing

reply

Can anybody actually tell the difference between one Caribbean-style tune and another?

reply

Nothing earth shattering, just a pet peeve of mine over the years. I think the original tune in this case was altered rather than replaced with a new one.

reply

How long did they have the first one? One series? Two?

Iirc, they had to change it because of a royalty problem.

reply

I don't recall. I had assumed they simply changed it just to freshen up the introduction as many shows often do over time. I was unaware of royalty issues. Was the composer not getting fully paid or something?

reply

They didn’t want to keep paying royalties.

reply

Interesting. I didn't know they could do that.

reply

Yeah, that’s why they switched to “cheaper” music. It impacts the royalties they have to pay on reruns, dvd sales and on streaming.

Incidentally, when the 1970s show, Happy Days, was introduced, the opening theme music was the classic 1950s rock and roll song, “Rock Around the Clock,” by Bill Hayley and the Comets. The producers changed it to save royalty fees and commissioned the Happy Days theme.

Thanks for the input.
