Sinking Ship

I just about managed to endure Ben Miller leaving and having Kris Marshall joining certainly wasn't a plus and then we lost camille and fidel. Then they started hiding clues from us so that it wasn't possible to deduce the murder, but it turns out it is always the obvious person, so we didn't need the clues.
there is nobody I care about now.
but it could be worse, it could be father brown

When Ben Miller left and Chris Marshall arrived I thought this was going to be ghastly. But, it wasn't; it was still good. To be honest, I never noticed Fidel leave and JP is doing just fine. Camille leaving is a bit of a blow but, again, Florence is doing just fine.
In short, I still like it.

Me too. I like the changes, the new characters are likeable enough, I don't particularly miss Fidel either.

Having rewatched the eps with Ben Miller, I noticed that after a while I got sick and tired of his constant complaining. Which isn't so bad in one episode per week, but if you watch 8 episodes in one day, it gets boring.

Though Miller is one of those actors that can make me be annoyed and amused at the same time, I'm happy that Kris's character is more ready to embrace the island and those who live there. Even the French ones. 

reply

Funny thing is, I liked the constant complaining a lot better than Marshal's constant fundling and mumbling, if anything that is getting annoying it's that..
But that was the actual premise of the show, an english cop who really doesn't want to be there, but in time is getting accustomed to the place (which is certainly noticable by the end of series 2)..

To me, having seen series 1, 2, 3 and 4 in a short time, I still think the Ben Miller series are way much better than the ones with Marshal..

That's true of most series. It's not so much the actors as the writing and production team. For example, if you critically watch the episodes of Are You Being Served? in chronological order, the first season is marginally, but still clearly, better than the second season; which is slightly better than the third season; which is slightly better than the fourth; and so on. By the time they got to the last (10th) season of AYBS?, it's very clear they were having trouble coming up with new ideas - especially if you compare the last season directly with the first.

Similarly, each season of Death in Paradise has been good, but the first season is slightly better than the second; the second is slightly better than the third; and so on.

It's unusual for multiple season television shows to not decline in quality over time. The Avengers is an exception that proves the rule. That show was good in its first season with Ian Hendry and Patrick McNee. It got better in its second season with Patrick McNee and Honor Blackmun. The third season was a little better than the second. Then the show hit is stride in the fourth season with Patrick McNee and Diana Rigg. The show was still good in the last season with Patrick McNee and Linda Thorson, but a set of decisions was made that broke production continuity so that it was, in many ways, a throwback of the series to the Cathy Gale years - effectively pickup up where Mrs Gale left off. That was unfortunate and probably unnecessary; but it was the loss of American funding that resulted in the show's demise. ABC-US foolishly removed it from its solid Friday night lineup to put it opposite Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In on Monday night, and it got pummeled in the ratings war.

Anyway, Death in Paradise follows the usual pattern of series evolution as its writers and production team get slowly tired from one season to the next. It's still good, but the fourth season is not as good as the third, which is not as good as the second, which is not as good as the first. But that's normal for any TV series.

You're right!

marea67 - you are so right. I have just re-watched series 1 and 2 on Netflix and what struck me is how unnecessarily mean Poole is to nearly everyone in every episode. And it's not just cranky whinging, but cruelty. I prefer Humphries' sweet-tempered bumbling.

reply

Cruel? Richard ? Go back and watch them again

reply

OP, what do you mean they started hiding clues from us so that it wasn't possible to deduce the murder? Do you want them to make it obvious (as apparently it is to you), who the murderer is from the get go? Wouldn't that spoil the fun of watching the show?

And maybe you're smarter than most of us, because to me it was not always the obvious person. I like the fact that I can't figure out who did it or why, and this still happens. So I don't consider it a sinking ship at all. I'm still loving it.

I have a rating system of detective from
murder she wrote (I can name who will die, who will be blamed and who actually did it)
then most other detective shows, frost, etc
then poirot
then monk (sometimes very tricky)
Jonathon Creek. ( I have to stop watching and talk about it and even then usually get it wrong) but lately they haven't been very good.

my favorite dip episode is the one with the headmaster and his murdered wife.

occam's razor doesn't always work in detective mysteries. :-)☺

reply

Is JOnathan Creek still on? I saw most of them on YouTube and then when I went back to see more they had all but disappeared. I really liked it although I missed the first girl a lot. I will see if I can find other episodes.

SPOILER ALERT: The one with the voodoo prediction? Clever. I thought he shouldn't have arrested the murderer when he did, but instead explained what happened (as he usually does), then turned to the Commissioner and said, "Sir. Would you like the honors?"

reply

How about Columbo? I always get the murderer in the first few minutes...

Seriously loving DiP though. I came to it late and am still on the Ben Miller shows....He's come a long way since Nude Vets in Practice...

i don't find the murders particularly obvious. But i do dislike the new detective. he irritates me, great gormless twit. however, i agree it is better than Father brown (but then so is almost anything).

louise, awww, I like Father Brown. I haven't seen all the episodes but the first few I have seen I really enjoyed them. I can get them online so I plan to catch up.

I like Father Brown, too. I loved the Kenneth More version when I was young, but I like the new version, too. Mark Williams and Sorcha Cusack work well together.

I've never seen the Kenneth More version. I do love the current Father Brown. I must see if I can find the Kenneth More version and check it out.

Gormless...now there's a word I wish had made it across the pond!

reply

How is a gormless twit? Seeing as he solves the murder every time I would say it was safe to assume he wasn't easily fooled, thus is not foolish. If he irritates you then perhaps don't watch it? I mean if he is eliciting such a strong response that compels you to poison his perception on IMDB pages I would suggest not wasting your time with the program and save subsequent time having to complain about it.

reply

Camille leaves!?! When? She's the entire reason I watch this show. I am so sad. ??

reply

This show jumped the shark when sexy Camille was replaced by Florence - the same character type - along with the most ridiculous clothes. The short shorts and off the shoulder blouse to attend COURT in the series 4 ender had me laughing. It was one of the worst episodes (obvious whodunnit) and I guess no identification badge is needed does that spoil the look?

I do like the show but just a bit more care in plot and character development would be nice.

I don't mind Humphrey and it WAS a wink to the viewer when the new guy wanted to just go arrest the suspect and was told "that is not the way we do things" , to go gather them all up.

I thought they should have promoted danny John Jules to be the main detective rather than bringing in yet another white man.

Dwayne is just a police officer, not even a sergeant or lieutenant or DS (detective sergeant). There is no way he could have been promoted to Chief and DI (detective Inspector).

reply

but why can't the detective be a black islander rqther than a white foreigner? Aren't there any natives who are fit for promotion?

You do realize the show lives off the fish-out-of-water idea?

its still a decent light hearted crime show.i enjoy it.if we are talking sinking ships, how about coronation street and EastEnders.sank years ago and now stuck at the bottom of the sea covered in barnacles.

reply

I don't know whether you've been to the British Virgin Islands ( a very close parallel to Ste Marie), but there most of the senior detectives are White British police officers on secondment. So in that sense, the show very much echos real life.

i find the whole idea that the islanders aren't fit to run their own police service a bit weird.

reply

Nobody, absolutely nobody, even remotely suggested that. Ever. You are talking about a problem that doesn't exist.

The viewing figures are up by a million or two since Ben Miller left, although I liked the show just as much or more then, so it's still very popular. It's a shame you no longer care for anyone on the show. I'm heartbroken. As for Father Brown it's not like he's forced on us at night lol.

reply

Viewing figures for what country? Great Britain or US/Canada? I would think it would make a great difference, depending on the size of the viewing population.
