I found this series on Netflix and have been watching it.
I was totally caught by surprise when the STAR suddenly gets killed off!!! What a bummer!
I'm continuing to watch with the new guy. Okay, he's good. Like that actor and the character. But I can't get my mind off Poole. I keep imagining him in this investigation or that one, interacting w/the characters. I had grown to really like that character, and I liked the actor.
I'll cont. to watch, though. The new guy's good. No doubt about it. Just wanted to say....:( I miss Poole.
Ben Miller is a comedian before an actor, probably his only other big show was as the administrator in Primeval, a sci-fi show about a group of folks who act as a taskforce when portals to other dimensions start opening up all over the place.
If you want to see him in his natural form with his comedy partner, Alexander Armstrong, type "The Armstrong and Miller Show" in to YouTube and enjoy :)
Yeah, it sucked massively when Poole got murdered. Camille was distraught for about a minute, then she and his other colleagues just went on joking and partying like it wasn't that big a deal. Even the lizard took to the new guy without seeming to notice the difference. Poor Richard; not loved in life, barely lamented in death.
I just started that episode, and I had to come here to look it up and see if it was true.
I've been binge-ing it, so 10 minutes ago when Camille wasn't sure if Poole would come back from his short trip to London, I was like, "Thankfully we know that he does come back, because there are over ten subsequent seasons." I was super excited, because I'd really grown to love him.
When I saw the episode's title, "Death of a Detective", I thought, "Hopefully it's not one of ours." But I honestly didn't think they'd do that to us in this show.
Even a few minutes into this episode, I was like, "Okay, this has to be something that Poole is just making up, like, 'If I went to that reunion I'd be bored to death, or actually murdered, and you'd all be so sad,' etc."
I was really hoping that that was the case :(
I'm pissed, I really fucking loved him, and I wanted to see what was going to progress with him and Camille.
Why'd they have to kill him though? If the actor had other things going on and they knew he wouldn't be on the show again anyway, why didn't they just make him stay in London at the end of season 2 like Camille was worried he would?
I love this show, but I'm not happy about the blindsided heartbreaking bullshit.
It's difficult for them because they have to be so far from home for such a long time to film it, so the detectives don't stay that long. They don't even get to enjoy the area much because all their time there is spent working.
But the other guys are also good. Give them a chance and they will quickly grow on you.
Oh damn, so there are more new guys to come? That's good to know, thank you.
I hope Camille doesn't fall in love with every single one of them...
And you're right, that makes sense, I hadn't really considered those things. Do you know offhand where they filmed the show? The island of Saint Marie is fictional, right?
I guess any show can go on for decades when you just keep changing out the characters.
Speaking of Guadalupe, though, this show made me confused on its pronunciation. All of the characters (even the British people) say it like "gwah-duh-LOOP", but I've otherwise only ever heard it pronounced like "gwah-duh-LOO-pay".
There are a lot of places called Guadalupe or Guadaloupe and pronunciation depends on who founded it and how the word sounds in their language. This island was named by the French so it uses their pronunciation. For more, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guadalupe
I agree with you. We were heartbroken when Richard was killed off but it only took two episodes for us to warm up to Humphrey. What a character and a great detective. We're now on Jack and are really starting to like him. I hope Dwaine is never replaced, we get such a kick out of him! It's a great show!
