Of course Nadine's brother has to be musicalar and hot, right?

Are we supposed to be surprised that Nadine's attractive friend and her athletic attractive brother hooked up? That's going to happen every time in real life if you have a brother that looks like Blake Jenner and your hot sister frequently brings her hot friends over.

Movies make an effort to be diverse among ethnic groups these days: but you know what we don't see? Diversity in attractiveness. Of course all 3 young leads had to be exceptionally hot. Even the people who were supposed to be "dorks" were attractive. And what was so bad about the Korean guy that Nadine wasn't initially attracted to him? He wasn't any worse looking than the guy she had a thing for at Petland, and he had a much better personality. It would be wrong to say the "dork" got the girl in the end, because he was actually a pretty good looking and confident guy with charisma. And he was tall, too, and had goals. He could easily play the good looking star the football team and another movie. But for some reason the film thinks he's the Ducky character from pretty in pink. Given Nadine's rough experiences, you think she would've been more thrilled that a guy from school was even expressing interest in her.

Anyway, about the brother, would the movie have the courage to cast a Jonah Hill type in that role, and have Krista's friend fall for him - strictly based on personality/emotional connection? instead it is a shocking revelation that two hot people hooked up and fell for each other when they are in the same house a lot of the time? Where's the Hollywood diversity among attractiveness?

I would agree, however it would be very unrealistic for a jonah hill type person to pick a girl as good looking as that. For me this was a good movie that would have been great if it was more realistic

It's not about diversity for the sake of diversity, it's about being true to life.

And how does it take courage to cast Jonah Hill? The only reason we know him is he's been in so much. He probably thinks little movies like this are beneath him

Well it's not very true to life in that Hailee Steinfeld is gorgeous, even the way she dressed in the movie was sexy -- guys like girls in Converse shoes, colored socks, etc. In movies that means "dorky" but in reality, guys like that.

We all know the geeky, "different" girl(s) we went to school with - and they don't look like Hailee Steinfeld nor have that charm she exudes- and Hollywood never casts girls that are true to reality for that role. Why? Because maybe we wouldn't sympathize with them as much.

Movies that do this are dangerous because, men are going to leave this movie having a crush on Hailee Steinfeld (and her character), and with Hailee portraying the weird, different, geeky, eccentric, social awkward girl - men will delude themselves into thinking they have a better chance with her, because they'll mistakenly think her being the outcast/nerd eliminates other men from wanting her, when in reality she is TOP TIER.

True, having stars that are too attractive for their role is the one area where entertainment often ISN'T true to life. Usually that's because audiences don't want to see ugly stars.

With this movie, it was pretty explicit that the non top tier guy (Erwin) was not having much luck, even when Hailee's character was very down and hard up. Only when she had no other choice, did she go to him, even though he was rich and had skills and projects.

Her character wasn't meant to be unattractive though but just misunderstood. There really isn't anything that suggested it had anything to do with how she looked. She just had poor relationships with her mom and her brother and in her childhood had a hard time making friends. Friends don't just become your friends because they like the way you look. There were just a lot of things about Nadine's personality that pushed people away despite how she looked. And idk but if she was considered geeky or dorky then that was something she chose to go by herself. Also I cant speak for all guys but I would assume more that maybe some guys go for the converse look but definitely not all of them.

I think its because there's nothing wrong with being different or geeky and being so doesn't have to make you unattractive because of it. Unless if the character was meant to be unattractive then I don't see why they have to choose unattractive actors for this movie specifically.

I dont think its dangerous for guys to have a crush on her.. but then it would be stupid to think that no other guy would like her too. But if that were to happen that would be the guy's fault not the movie's fault

The opposite really. What both Krista and Darian had in common was their complicated relationship with Nadine and they seemed to have a connection because they understood each other. Their looks were only part of it.

Of course all 3 young leads had to be exceptionally hot. Even the people who were supposed to be "dorks" were attractive.

This made laugh while reading this. Since when does being a dork mean you have to be unattractive?

Besides being really awkward there was nothing wrong with Erwin, but it was Nadine who had something wrong with her because her insecurities about herself affected how she perceived everyone else around her. And the movie shows that her perceptions of other people were hardly ever accurate.

Erwin was much better than the other guy she went for. When it comes to looks I think Erwin was better looking, but I don't think he was confident at all because he was always so nervous and never knew what to say whenever he was around her. And it was obvious to Nadine that he already liked her. But Nadine wanted to seek acceptance from a guy that didn't care much for her instead for whatever reason that might be. I think the main issue with Nadine is that she really wants people to accept her for who she is but she cant even accept anyone else for who they are.. and she has in her mind of what people should be and what they should do for her. I think she went for the other guy at first because she wanted to make him like her back, but she learns she cant control people like that and that was what got her to lose her best friend to begin with. She learns where she went wrong at the end, and then realizes that Erwin along with other people were the types of people that were good for her.

Because it just doesn't fit the character. The brother was obsessed about his appearance and always wanted to look his best.. That was part of his personality. If you were to take that part away from him it would be a completely different character. You need to find the actor that matches the character.

Where have you been in real life?

Most "dorks" are not attractive people. The "dorks/geeks/nerds" of high school, and victims of bullying, are most often not the attractive elite of the high school. If they were, they wouldn't be those things. High school students are very superficial -- looks are the predominant factor in what will determine their social standing - everything else, like sports activity, social skills, clubs, come in behind that. Trust me, I remember high school, all that was required of a junior boy was to be good looking, and he could get any freshman girl to sleep with him.

But in Hollywood, the "geeks" are virtually always played by attractive actors - take She's All That, when the DORK Rachel Leigh Cook, and all she had to do was take off her glasses and she's a BOMBSHELL. This is a motif that has been spoofed over and over again since.

Again, let me reiterate, GOOD LOOKS are the predominant factor to high school students. Even if you have bad social skills, as long as you're "hot" you will have success in popularity. High school students are superficial and do not see beyond looks into things such as good personality.

While human beings tend to mature after high school, and look beyond things like physical appearance, they are still very crucial to the human mind. There's a reason we don't see ugly "nerds" in Hollywood movies in lead roles - humans simply won't care/empathize with them.

We weren't meant to be surprised because they show it in the trailer. And as someone else said no one wants to watch a movie with ugly people. Ever seen Welcome to the Dollhouse? Not exactly a big hit, just a cult following.

Not true..

If its a good movie it doesn't matter

Name a hit movie that is full of ugly people in the leads
