haha, no, not really. I feel like Paul and Mary kind of stick up for her a lot - mentioning she's studying for exams, etc. It seemed most the other people worked as well so what's the point?
And that house she presented in the last episode. My God it looked bad, but the judges said nothing! They only jumped on Frances for not making her own mini pots. Ignore the mess that's Ruby's slanted, falling apart house - how dare Frances not put edible pots up for display!
It just kind of irritates me. What do you guys think?
They've gotten on Ruby plenty and she's gotten on herself, having little to no confidence in her own abilities and telling the judges that as she's presenting her bakes. They've also repeatedly told Frances that she's putting more emphasis on the style rather than the substance but she continues to do it anyway. I think they're tough on everyone and it just depends on that particular bake. Ruby's shed didn't look all that bad... it could very easily have been a lean-to building or an old dilapidated shed that was starting to fall over. The reason they ragged on Frances for not making her own little pots is that they don't like non-edible decorations and they've said that before. For the record, judges on other baking competitions I've watched say the same thing... if it's not able to be eaten, don't use it.

I ended up being very irritated by Ruby's "Poor me, I'm terrible" attitude, but that wasn't a house - it was a garden shed on an allotment, and it looked pretty much like the one on our allotment when we first took it on. It was leaning at an alarming angle and we Christened it the Margaret Thatcher Memorial Hall.

I like her except for that bit. She is young, but she keeps fishing for compliments. I'm afraid she will end up winning, but I'm rooting for Kimberly.
Okay, I admit it. I think this was the real problem for me all along. I really don't like when people pretend not to know what they're doing when clearly they do.
I seriously doubt that Ruby is pretending to not know what she's doing or that she is fishing for compliments. She is insecure and lacks confidence. Some people are just like that.
It isn't an act. It's pretty obvious she is extremely hard on herself and has self doubt. Do you think she has the acting chops of Meryl Streep or something?
To be fair though Ruby is not a professional(none of them are). And compared to many of the contestants, she knows the least. I think she is just hard on herself. I never thought once she was trying to pull one over on the judges. But they too know at 21, she has a lot to learn with baking(& not saying anything when she thinks she's screwed up😉).
She drives me up the wall. So tired of her "woe is me" faces. Tonight she was the worst one, yet she survived. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday!!! I find nothing special in what she does. She should of left in the semi final.
Ruby was one of my early favorites, but her "Woe is me, this is horrible, it's going to be a disaster..." shtick became increasingly irritating over time. I don't think it's an act, I think it's a defense mechanism (either conscious or not) against criticism. Beat yourself up so badly that the judges won't have the heart to pile-on. They might even have sympathy for you and try to reassure you. It might work at first, but as time goes on it becomes annoying.
As for Frances, there was some truth to the style over substance meme, but I think at times it became a lazy refrain for the judges to fall back on. You see that a lot on these shows, a contestant gets stereotyped in a certain way (weak with seasoning, bad at time management, unprepared...), and after a while the judges start looking for that while missing it in others.
In last night's episode, Ruby's mother confirmed that she's always been really tough on herself and never thinks she's done enough. I liked her at first but I got tired of her hanging her head in shame and apologizing as she was taking her Showstoppers up to Paul and Mary. And last night, she was crying even before all of the judging had taken place. It's almost as if she was willing herself to lose. I hope that at some point, she'll realize that being in the finals of the GBBO is quite a feather in her cap and she'll gain some much-needed self-confidence.
Hmmm..I am a bit surprised at some people's reactions to Ruby. Remember these are not professional bakers. Some have been doing it a long time, some not. It's also not as if she competes a lot. When you are in a competition, you tend to put a lot of stress on yourself. So she's hard on herself. People react in different ways. He**, I do this for a living. And I can tell you, it doesn't feel too great to screw up. She also had exams she was doing at the same time. For all we know, she may not have done so well on those. The way she reacts is far more easier to take than to watch people bend over backwards to screw another baker over.
I think she was Star Baker 3 times, more than Frances or Kimberley. And during the final, she did what the judges seemed to think was a nearly perfect picnic pie and they said she was leading going into the Showstopper. It was there for the taking but her old insecurities got the better of her again. Like I said before, I hope she takes the time to look back over what she did during the competition and realizes that she's a lot better than she thinks. That will help her not just in her baking but in every aspect of her life because her mother said she's always had a lot of self-doubt about things.
