Question for people with knowledge in medicine... (Spoilers) How come...

...they couldn´t stop an elbow wound to get gangrene, but they had no problem healing a fully cut arm without proper resources?

I always wonder about that when it happens in the movies.

I'm not an expert, but:
The elbow wound wasn't treated properly in the first place. They didn't have anything to disinfect it with and just hoped for the best. When gangrene set in, it was way too late for anything but amputation (gangrene is dangerous even today).
When they were doing the amputation, they had alcohol (probably strong) to disinfect the stump with. After amputating, they didn't have to carefully treat him and try to avoid damaging his arm. It was enough to disinfect the wound and cauterize it with burning wood to stop the bleeding (which I think they didn't do in the movie).

They said "We have to cut the arm off and get him to a hospital." In reality he would have died. In the Civil War amputations had a high mortality rate. How would you tie off the arm before amputating, with the wound so high on the arm? They just showed lopping it off. They also showed skinning a rabbit inside, gross.

Sh-it's a secret!

Antibiotics hadn't been invented. Heck, germ theory hadn't even been proposed by then. I'm no medical expert but certainly this soldier would have died if they hadn't eventually gotten him proper medical care. The amputation might have bought him that much time.

They did tie it off high on his arm. I'd guess that his subsequent medical care would have stumped it at the shoulder joint.
