Why didn't the German plane return to base with the others?

I may have misunderstood but there seemed to be an unresolved issue of why the German leader didn't follow orders to return. They sort of shushed each other as if agreeing to talk about it later in private but it never seemed to come up again. Would someone please explain this?

At the end (before they are found by the Norwegians), Schopis talks to Davenport and tells him that his wife left him for his best friend. He said he wanted to impress her (return as a war hero) and took things too far.
