Did they actually shoot each other down?

did they actually shoot each other down or when they say that in the film do they just mean that German planes shot down the British plane and vice versa?

"You must never underestimate the power of the eyebrow."

In the beginning when they are in a snow cave, Josef says that there was one German and three British planes in combat, so the Germans must have shot them down.

German Heinkel bomber has a machine gun at the top of it looking backwards. It is used against fighters. German gunner hit one of the British fighters with that gun.

He threw the gun and hit the British plane with the gun? Simply amazing.

But no wonder the Germans were shot down later; they had no way to defend themselves against the other two British planes.

I don't think the movie made it perfectly clear: in real life, the Brits shot down the German bomber but the British aircraft went down due to engine trouble.

At one point when they're holding the beam up, the British officer tells the German one when the German says he's a lousy pilot, "Well, I am an excellent pilot and you shot me down."

Plus later back at the Norwegian base he does tell the Norwegian officer that they shot each other down. Maybe that's not how it happened in real life, but the movie seem to portray that they did indeed shoot each other down.
