Series 5 - could we please go back to basics?
Firstly, this viewer is delighted to know that Series 5 will air later in 2016. Thank you, SYFY! Thank you, RawTV. That being said, it's very much hoped that Season 5 will be more like the earlier seasons than Season 4.
While I'm generally a most appreciative viewer of the show, many who have criticised the last season do still have some very valid points. There are too many jump scares, too many entities hiding around every corner. The producers need to accept that scariness simply loses its value - either when it's overplayed - or when too much artistic licence is taken.
The audience does not need to be scared every minute - otherwise normalcy bias soon sets in, and then everyone gets bored with yet another cheap scare.
Most long term viewers and supporters of the show, are all too aware that hauntings can drag on for months without the slightest unusual thing occurring. And then when something does happen, it is all the more scary for the fact that it is so unusual, so unexpected.
This fifth season of Paranormal Witness needs to recapture that fascinatingly mysterious sense of anticipation, without trying to cram a 'money shot' into almost every second scene!
Please producers, put more emphasis on echoing what the contributors are narrating, and far less emphasis on the all too hackneyed 'jump scares', over stylised fancy effects - which depart from what's just been said.
Except where the narrator is stating something which calls for a spooky re-enactment, such should be left well alone until really called for! That is the essence which has arguably been lacking from the last season; and, in that sense, we really need to get back to basics: Paranormal Witness is an incredible show. The best of its kind. But it just needs to be steered back on course.
Here's hoping the production team will listen to feedback and do the right thing from now on.
Thank you for listening.
