Great Uncle?

if stans brother didnt have a wife and kids, who in term would have mable and dipper, then how can he be a great uncle?

reply

As Grunkle Stan said in "A Tale of Two Stans" Dipper and Mabel are Shermy's grandkids. But it hasn't been revealed yet if Shermy is an older sibling or the baby their mother was holding.

I think it's obvious the baby was Shermy.

I think Shermy is an older sibling. On the boards on the cave was an "R + S". The S might stand for Shermy. I think the baby is Shermy's.

If the baby was Shermy, he would've had to knocked up some girl at 15 and their son would've had to knocked up a girl at 15. Series takes place in 2012, flashback was late 1960's, that would make him in his early 40's which would mean he became a grandpa in his late 20's. I think the baby is Dipper and Mabel's father visiting his grandparents and Shermy is much older than the Stans.

I think it's obvious that the baby was Shermy. People are just getting too hung up on math.

Didn't Stanford say when introduced to Dipper and Mabel that he was surprised he had a nephew and niece now?

Thus Dipper and Mabel have a great uncle whose brother is their uncle. Which proves that the Pines family members sometimes describe relationships inaccurately, like many real people.

Unless possibly Stanley and Stanford are both great uncles and plain uncles to Dipper and Mabel because Stanley and Standford's brother married his niece (presumably the daughter of an unnamed [half?] sister who was the oldest sibling).

Or possibly Dipper and Mabel are the illegitimate children of an incestuous relationship and have been raised by adoptive parents.

Or maybe Dipper and Mabel's father married his sister's stepdaughter who is counted when calling them grand nephew and niece and not counted when calling them nephew and niece.

And why did Stanley say that he considered Dipper and Mabel his only real relatives now? What happened to Shermy, who was probably Dipper and Mabel's parent or grandparent? What happened to Dipper and Mabel's parents? Was Stanley too emotional to remember them?

Thus the Pines family tree suffers from the vague use of relationship terms and there are several possible forms it could take.

reply

He didn't know about Dipper and Mabel because he was gone for 30 years.

Why are people making this into something more complicated than it is?

Shermy is the baby. He married a woman who is Dipper and Mabel's grandmother. Family and relationships happen, blahblahblah. Stan was there during their birth.

He probably considers Dipper and Mabel his only "real" relatives because he's probably not that close with Shermy. Or Shermy could have died.

I think it's because Dipper and Mabel are the only ones who know the real him since everyone else still believes him to be dead.
