Anyone know whether BP's making any money from this?

They'd damn well better not.

How could they possibly make money from this?

Are they never mentioned in the film? That'd be hard to believe. Copyright fee.

I believe any use of their name would fall under the Fair Use Act if there were a copy right issue involved.

But I doubt it since it's a public fact that BP was the principle operator on the Deepwater Horizon when it was destroyed and BP was found liable in a court of law.

So, no copyright or trademark infringement unless BP can sue for (1) defamation (doubtful), or (2) improper use of their hallmark (I didn't see the film so I don't know if their hallmark was ever visible in the film.)

Thanks for your thoughtful answer, star. I think you're right. Just hoping there is no way BP will make money from this (maybe even lose some, if people who see it decide never to buy BP gas again).

their logo appears quite a few times, no such thing as bad publicity

Just Hollywood cashing in on this one..
