From the description it sounds like this is based on the Gloucester High School incident where more than a dozen students were pregnant at the same time. At the time a rumor circulated, I believe started by one of the school administrators, that some of the girls had been part of a pact to get pregnant together. But that's false. They never had any evidence of a "pregnancy pact" and the girls themselves said that the closest thing was some of them agreeing to help each other raise their kids and finish school.
"Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything."
I have no clues to the Gloucester facts, but if I were a teen, and made such a secret pact, I would NOT have confessed it, even under waterboarding. Maybe one of them girls will write her memories in a few decades, and we'll know for sure. On the other hand, one have to reckon that teens - boys and girls alike - tend to act like sheep (there's a word for it in Italian, I don't know in English), so if an Alpha girl dyies her hair green, very likely many others will follow. Yes, a hairstyle and a pregnancy are not the same, but imagine if this doesn't turn into picking the short straw for the girl in question; in this sense, maybe the real starter of the epidemic was not the first, the alpha girl, but the second, i.e. the fake pregnant, that turned it into a fashion. Just my opinion. Nice movie, anyway. Incredibly natural acting.
Agreed. Anyhow, whether or not there was a formal "pact" in Gloucester is beside the point. That high school went from having four pregnancies to 18 in one year. That's not likely to be random chance. There almost certainly was some degree of copycatting going on.
If you're a student and you see one of your friends become pregnant, maybe the stigma about teen pregnancy fades a little in your mind (and note that the movie Juno had recently come out, starring a pregnant teenaged girl). You decide that it's OK if you have unprotected sex - at worst, you'll have a friend pregnant at the same time. And then you get pregnant, your friends see it, and the process continues. Eventually it becomes a "trend."
